collectSPACE Philip Chapman, first Australian-born NASA astronaut, dies at 86An Apollo-era NASA astronaut who was the first person born in Australia to train for a spaceflight, Philip Chapman has died at the age 86, having never made it into orbit. Chapman died on Monday (April 5) in Scottsdale, Arizona, almost 50 years after he resigned from NASA due to what he saw as a lack of opportunities for scientists in the astronaut corps. |

I wonder if he ever expressed regret about not staying on to fly the Shuttle. |

I know that Phil was a sporadic signer and not very receptive to all manner of approaches and requests over the years, but when I was researching my books "Australia's Astronauts" and "NASA's Scientist-Astronauts" (with Dave Shayler) he was very approachable and forthcoming. He sent me some great anecdotes about his personal life and career, and his pointed views on several space-related subjects, such as the space shuttle. He was a very pragmatic and outspoken person in his time as a scientist-astronaut, and would often cross swords with Deke Slayton. He possessed a brilliant analytical mind, and was a keen advocate of space exploration. There are some who might regard him as aloof and unhelpful, but my memory of Phil Chapman is of an extremely helpful countryman, our very first NASA astronaut, and a little boy in love with space travel and rockets who grew up just a few miles from here, and given the chance would have forged a truly superb and even remarkable career as a scientist-astronaut. His passing came as a shock to me today, but the memories are and will remain strong and fond. Rest easy, Phil Chapman. |
