One of the classiest men you could ever hope to meet! I'm stunned.

That's made for a miserable day ahead for me. A wonderful man. First man and last man gone.

My profound sympathies to his family and his friends.

What a super guy, and great supporter of the space program. For the last man on the surface of the moon he was really down to Earth person to talk to. Travel well commander.

Very sad news...

So pleased to have met this great man in Sheffield at the showing of the Last Man on the Moon — a lovely down to Earth man who had time for everyone I saw approach him.

Godspeed Gene Cernan.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Capt. Cernan on several occasions over the past 30 years. I was in high school when he became the final person to have visited the moon. Godspeed to a great pilot and explorer.

I cannot believe another NASA pioneer has passed away. In 2003, on the 100th anniversary of the first aviation flight, I had the opportunity to meet Gene Cernan in person as well as get a photo with him (in which is gone).

Goodbye Cernan; you may be gone, but you won't be forgotten...

Yes, he was one of the few Apollo astronauts who was always nice and comfortable with the general public. Sorry to hear. So sad.

This is so sad...

As a child, he was my hero, more than any other astronaut, for going to the moon twice and finishing the Apollo programme with such a perfect mission to such an incredibly beautiful spot on the moon.

Since then I have always kept this weak spot for him and I feel very fortunate to have been able to meet him on a number of occasions.

The last time was at the 2012 ASF show and perhaps the most cherished moment of that event was when I managed to sneak up on him after an evening's event and I got him to look up to the moon with me, with him explaining where he landed and how the light then was exactly the opposite of how we saw it that evening.

I had always hoped to be able to meet him one more time, and in fact just yesterday I was thinking that perhaps there might be an Apollo 17 45th anniversary event. Alas...

My thoughts are with his family and friends. Godspeed, Gene Cernan.

I am personally distraught at this news, but in our sorrow let us remember an extraordinary life, extraordinarily well lived. A great American and a great explorer.

He always said he didn't think he'd live to see another person walk on the Moon. I had always hoped he would be proved wrong. RIP Capt. Cernan. Fair winds and following seas...
