Though I knew this day was coming soon it was still a shock to read it in print. I grew up with Uncle Walter. I can remember watching Neil and Buzz walking on the Moon on our little B&W TV set while sitting with my Mom in our recliner. Though I can't remember a distinct Cronkite segment then, (I was 7 at the time) I do remember him being there so often that I thought he was as important as the astronauts themselves. He was that man with that voice.
My Granddaddy had bought a 45 sized record called 'Man On The Moon' narrated by Cronkite. I played that record every time I visited my grandparents, which was often as we lived only a few miles away. This is the same record you see under glass in the Early Space exhibit inside KSC's Debus Building.
33 years ago today my Granddaddy died of a heart attack at age 61 on July 19, 1976 - the day before the Apollo 11 7th anniversary and just before the first Viking probe landed on Mars. Later, my Grandmama gave me that record. The price sticker is still on the back... 39 cents. It has been proudly displayed among other space memorabilia for many years and is one of my most cherished possessions.
Cronkite was such a part of my early years that I developed a knack for impersonating his voice. Years ago I changed my phone message daily with something close to, "I can't take your call right now, but please leave your name and number. It's July 19, 2009. I'm Walter Cronkite and that's the way it is."
It is not just another page in history that has turned but another chapter.

The New York Post reports about the guest list for the memorial tribute:
The Walter Cronkite memorial service on Sept. 9 at Lincoln Center is shaping up to be a historic event. President Obama is expected to speak, as are Bill Clinton, Buzz Aldrin for NASA, and Nick Clooney in place of his son, George -- who entertained the beloved CBS anchorman at his villa on Lake Como and will be away at the Venice Film Festival. Then, the CBS brass will speak: Les Moonves, Sean McManus, Bob Schieffer and maybe Andy Rooney, if he can. Rooney choked up at the funeral and couldn't deliver his eulogy. Tom Brokaw and Howard Stringer will also speak between performances by Wynton Marsalis, Michael Feinstein, Jimmy Buffett and Mickey Hart, and the US Marine Corps band. Said one friend, "Walter deserved all this and more."

During a media briefing Sept. 11, Daniel Andrews, LCROSS project manager at Ames, provided a mission status update indicating the spacecraft is healthy and has enough fuel to successfully accomplish all mission objectives. Andrews also announced the dedication of the LCROSS mission to the memory of legendary news anchor, Walter Cronkite, who provided coverage of NASA's missions from the beginning of America's manned space program to the age of the space shuttle.
"Dad would sure be proud to be part, if just in name, of getting humans back up to the moon and beyond," said Chip Cronkite, son of the famed news anchor.
