I read a footnote in the book "Hypersonic: The Story of the North American X-15" that Jackie Cochran had applied for permission to the fly the X-15.

Can anyone tell me if she actually did apply or if it was just an idea and no action was ever taken?

I have my doubts the Air Force and NASA would ever have allowed it. But if anyone could have pulled off getting permission, it would have been Jackie Cochran.

As far as I can recall, Jackie lobbied to get a flight in the X-15 and took it to the AF top brass but was let down gently.

All times are CT (US)
