collectSPACE Jack King, NASA's 'Voice of Apollo,' dies"Lift-off! We have a lift-off... 32 minutes past the hour. Lift-off on Apollo 11." It was with those words, on the morning of July 16, 1969, that Jack King – NASA's "Voice of Apollo" – gave start to the first mission to land men on the moon. King, who served for 12 years as the space agency's chief of public information, spanning the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, died on Thursday (June 11). He was 84. "Jack helped establish the original systems to ensure the media received timely and accurate information about both the early human flight programs and unmanned missions," said Hugh Harris, a retired director of public affairs at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. |

.PS, I just again watched his comments on Spacecraft Films' Live from the Moon. It is great to see his enthusiasm, so many years after the events that he was so closely involved with. It is sad that he is no longer with us. |

As a fellow Massachusetts native, I always thought it was cool that someone from Boston was such a visible part of the Apollo program.RIP Jack King. |

He was a true gentleman and a pioneering Public Relations man.I was fortunate to interview Jack several times. Once with Rich Jurek for our book Marketing the Moon where Jack is featured in a very important section on the open Apollo communications programs. He was a vital part of the Apollo project. |

Another Space Age legend gone from us! Jack King was a great guy and friend that I've had the pleasure to know and visit with on many occasions. We first met during the 1980s during an Apollo reunion get together in Cocoa Beach. He was a pioneer in his own right and a NASA public relations leader all throughout the Gemini and Apollo program years. Even throughout the later shuttle program years, Jack headed all the news media relations for United Space Alliance at the Kennedy Space Center. On many occasions we would see each other there while covering and working on many space shots from the shuttle press site. Here's in memory of a friend and space pioneer, the "Voice of Apollo": 10, 9, ignition sequence starts, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, all engines running. LIFTOFF! We have a liftoff, 32 minutes past the hour. Liftoff of Apollo 11. |

I was so sorry to hear of Jack's passing. I had the privilege of meeting him at the National Air and Space Museum during the Apollo 11 20th anniversary. At first he seemed wary of talking to me because he thought I was a reporter and he said all week people had been asking him to recite the Apollo 11 countdown. When I told him I was just a fan he could not have been nicer and we chatted a bit. Good man. |

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Jack, though I never meet him his voice is embedded in my memory. On July 16, 1969 I was 14 staying with my grandparents in Devon, England watching the launch of Apollo 11 on BBC TV. It was an intense time watching and hoping all was well as the rocket slowly left the pad. Echoing across the thunderous roar was the calm voice of Jack letting us know that at 32 minutes past the hour Apollo 11 was on its way. Every time I hear those words my mind shoots back to that Wednesday afternoon in Devon and to the adventure that had just begun. R.I.P Jack. |
