A true gentleman, I had the pleasure of meeting Jack at the 35th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing at KSC along with Jim Lovell. RIP.

Damn it! My girlfriend and I both had the pleasure of meeting and chatting to Jack at the ASF in 2012. I asked him if he had a favourite astronaut and he said "I'll tell you who was my least favourite... should have left him on the Moon" to which we really laughed! He was brilliant to talk to. RIP Mr King!!

When I was just a young boy around 7 years old I somehow had a 45rpm record that had all the key public announcer moments of the Apollo 11 mission. Jack King's voice was the principal voice on the recording of course and it's seared into my memory even now, decades later. I wish I still had that 45rpm but it was either lost along the way or worn out from my EXCESSIVE listening and my mom tossed it. Jack, you were great!

When I attended my first ASF Autograph Show in 2012 I wasn't sure what to expect having only attended strictly run sports shows. When I first walked into the lobby of the show it was Jack King sitting near the entrance that gave me a friendly hello as I entered and made me realize this was no unfriendly sports show. I'll never forget that.

I too had the belated privilege of finally meeting Mr. King at my first ASF show two years ago, putting a charming personality to that unforgettable voice.

Even in the Gemini days he was dogged for countdowns — I was fortunate that he recounted a story of a quiet afternoon couch nap interrupted by him finding his then-elementary-school-aged son standing over him, surrounded by several friends, beseeching dad for a countdown which was granted. Later that day he discovered his enterprising offspring had collected a whole quarter from each of his buddies for the service!

High flight to a fine man!

At Jack King's memorial service today, he was awarded a posthumous NASA Distinguished Service Medal. From NASA News Chief Bob Jacobs:
Honored to present Jack King's family the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. A well-deserved honor for an icon in aerospace history and communications.

I was struck at hearing Jack's voice when I watched video of the Apollo 11 launch on this anniversary date. It's the first time I've heard his voice since his passing.
