Wikipedia's entry for Scott Carpenter has an "In pop culture" section, which mentions the predictable (e.g. "The Right Stuff") but also things like Scott Tracy in "The Thunderbirds" being named after him. And then there was this... |

I will be putting together a tribute page on Scott's web site over the next several days. For those that may want to contribute a story or two, or a photo to go with your story, please send it to me at webmaster@scottcarpenter.com. I will do my best to get as many up as I can. Judging on the amount of e-mails that have been received throughout the day, many people have a lot to say as he touched many lives. |

This is such sad news, coming so close to the passing of Gordo Fullerton. I was fortunate to chat with Scott on a number of occasions at Autographica shows here in the UK. He was always willing to answer questions and show kindness to all he met. Scott was a true gentleman and was constantly surprised with the popularity he still held. As organiser of the early Astronaut 'Lectures' at Autographica, I found it an honour and pleasure to arrange his talks. I recall fondly his first show at Coventry in November 2003. He was scheduled to talk on both Saturday and Sunday and told me he was amazed that anyone would want to listen to him talk about his single four hour space flight on both days. In our discussions I suggested on later talks he could vary his content by including recollections about Sealab, the early astronaut selection process, his flying career and perhaps his support work in the early stages of Apollo. This again surprised him. He was not sure that the audience would want to hear about such things, but took the suggestions on board. His talks were always well received, with great feed back on his enthusiasm to share his various experiences. One other memory of Scott at Autographica is from when he was on the guest list with UK actor Shane Rimmer. Shane voiced one of the Thunderbird puppets for the 1960s TV show. Creator Gerry Anderson had named each of his main puppet models after five of the seven Mercury astronauts. Shane voiced SCOTT Tracy, named of course after Scott Carpenter. A great photo opportunity therefore presented itself which my brother Mike gladly set up. This unusual connection amused both Scott and Shane. I feel honoured to have known and spoken with Scott who, as I mentioned earlier, was one a true gentlemen from the pioneering era of manned space flight. Thanks for the memories Scott, and Godspeed with your exploration of another 'New Ocean' of discovery. |

Although I'd met Scott Carpenter several times, and he always knew my name when we met, one of my proudest moments came just this year at Spacefest V when I finally had the chance to give him a copy of my book "Selecting the Mercury Seven," and he said "Colin, I've been looking forward to reading this." I will never forget those kind words or the gentle friendship he had shown me over many years since our first meeting back in 1993, some 20 years ago.His was the first space flight I followed right from the outset back in 1962, and I will miss him more than words can say. Our older son is named Scott after him, and when our son was married 10 years ago Scott gave me a few words to read out at the wedding reception. Whenever I attend a space function in the future, there will always be a vacant chair where my childhood hero should be. Scott Carpenter will always be a legend and an inspiration to me, and we are all the poorer for his passing. Go softly and boldly into the night, Scott, and may the gentle poet in you discover and marvel at majesty, magnificence and glories beyond any mortal expectations or imagination. |

.M. Scott Carpenter is and always will be at the top of my (very limited) list of personal heroes. I feel so fortunate to have met him at various events over the last several years. This is a dark time for all of us space fans. |

Very sad and surprising news, now there is only one left from the Original Seven. I met him a few times and he was always a gentleman — no arrogance or attitude, just a regular guy. I have come to feel that he got the short end of the stick as an astronaut.R.I.P Scott Carpenter |
