Being an 8-year old kid in 1962, Scott Carpenter was one of those astronaut heroes, who made a lot of impression on me. Sad to learn about his death.God Speed Scott! RIP |

I first met Scott Carpenter in 1992 at a fund raising event for the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation: Celebrating 30 Years of Americans in Space. Over the years I had the pleasure to meet him a number of times. His book signing in Cocoa Beach in 2003, the ASF Autograph Show more than once. I gifted Mr. Carpenter one of my Mercury Commemorative patches and that opened the door to discuss the possiblity of designing a special 50th Anniversary commemorative to mark his space flight aboard Aurora 7. At the unveiling of the Alan Shepard US Postal Stamp, I presented him with the prototype patch that Jorge Cartes and I designed. Soon after I received a phone call from him with the request to produce it. Scott Carpenter was always kind and gracious to me. He appreciated my effort on his behalf. I will forever be grateful to have had the chance to work with a childhood hero. Godspeed Scott Carpenter. |

I was 11 when Scott Carpenter made his only spaceflight, and he was always one of my favorite astronauts. He was dashing, athletic, inquisitive, and a fine test pilot. He drew the ire of some in NASA management with his motorcycling, skiing, and diving. I wrote him a letter in l966 and he responded with a personal letter to me , unlike the form letters from others. He was the only early astronaut never to use an autopen. At space events he was friendly to all, with a smile and a sense of humor. He will be missed. RIP.

That fourth image in of Scott looking over the table at Kris is just priceless with that mischievous grin on her face. And Scotty has a similar mischievous grin on his face in the picture they chose for the cover of the first printing of "For Spacious Skies." |
