If memory serves me, Ellison Onizuka was a member of that team. Fred Gregory might also have been on it.

From Onizuka's official NASA biography:

NASA EXPERIENCE: Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978, he completed a 1-year training and evaluation period in August 1979. He subsequently worked on orbiter test and checkout teams and launch support crews at the Kennedy Space Center for STS-1 and STS-2...

From Gregory's NASA bio:

NASA EXPERIENCE: Gregory was selected as an astronaut in January 1978. His technical assignments included: Astronaut Office representative at the Kennedy Space Center during initial Orbiter checkout and launch support for STS-1 and STS-2;...

I am a little confused about the original question. Are you referring to the Rockwell international closeout crew members in the white room, or the astronaut support crew of which Onizuka was a member of?

Loren Shriver was on the STS-1 close-out crew. In fact, he helped Young and Crippen get connected to the ejection seats.

Quote from Space.com:

"The oxygen hoses to their masks had to be hooked up just right," Shriver said, adding that he ended up using pliers to wedge Crippen's hose into place to give him air. "That was, hopefully, my contribution to the success of that mission."

Junior Bumgardner was the first OVCC (Orbital Vehicle Closeout Crew) for the shuttle program. Paul Arnold was no. 4 and Richard Merritt was no. 5. I can't remember who the NASA QC was but Loren Shriver was the Astronaut Support Personnel (ASP) and I believe Troy (can't remember last name) was the only suit tech. They did the first five launches.

Travis, with your knowledge of the subject and your name, I am sure I am not the only one here wondering who are you? Are you Travis Thomson?

Travis, welcome to the collectSPACE community!

For the benefit of those who may not be familiar, Travis was on the closeout crew from, I believe, 1983 through the end of the program, at which time he was chief. His uniform, crew chief patches and USA cap are now part of the national collection curated by the Smithsonian.

(Travis was on hand inside Discovery, Endeavour and Atlantis when I had the chance to photograph the crew cabins for this site before the orbiters headed off to their museum homes.)
