Spacefest VI is turning into (among other things), a book event. Two publishers, UNP (Outward Odyssey) and Springer (various astronaut and Apollo books) will be selling books to have signed by the authors. Colin Burgess will be in charge of the book room(s), and has convinced most of the Outward Odyssey authors to attend, speak, and sign. Among the authors will be Francis French, Jay Gallentine, Jay Chladek, Kate Doolan, Michelle Evans (new acclaimed book on the X-15), Andy Chaikin, David Brin, Mike Carroll, David Woods, Frank O'Brien, David Levy, Geoff Notkin, Tom Jones, Mike Mullane, Glynn Lunney and Jerry Bostick, Sy Liebergot, and more. |

Kim, are you going to ask the authors to sign extra copies? I don't yet know if I will be attending, but would like to get an X-15 book signed by Michelle Evans. |

Yes.To elaborate, we already have a lot of signed books, and I expect we'll sell out of X-15 books. You should contact someone who's going to get you one there. |

For those planning to attend Spacefest and who are arriving early, the SpaceOps 2014 conference may be of interest. The conference immediately precedes (and somewhat overlaps) Spacefest at the Pasadena Convention Center, May 5-9. Though primarily a technical conference, SpaceOps 2014 includes several plenary speakers of potential wider appeal, including: - Charles Elachi, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
- Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations
- Michael Moses, Vice President of Operations for Virgin Galactic
Also, ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter (Soyuz TM-22, STS-121, ISS 13/14) will be the speaker at the SpaceOps awards dinner to be held May 7 at the California Science Center (seated under space shuttle Endeavour). |

Please come to Spacefest VI's one-of-a-kind Voyager Reunion Panel. Four key participants will gather to candidly share their memories — their heartaches and victories, pains and successes — and look forward to hearing your questions as well.It all happens on Sunday, May 11, from 10:30-11:30am Here are the panelists: - John Casani: Voyager Project Manager, Prelaunch Phase
- Ed Stone: Voyager Project Scientist
- Charley Kohlhase: Voyager Mission Design Manager
- Suzanne Dodd: Project Manager, Voyager Interstellar Mission
- Moderator: Jay Gallentine
Years ago, two nimble spacecraft called 'Voyager' swung past Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune to complete a 12-year 'Grand Tour' of the outer planets. Designed in the '60s and launched in the '70s, they happened upon sights that nobody could ever have guessed. The Voyagers also weathered several near-death experiences involving mechanical **** -ups and electronic gremlins. Political hurricanes blew through; at one point the flight officially had no money past Saturn. Yet these hardy contraptions went the distance. From "Staying Alive" to "My Sharona" to "Thriller" to "We Are the World", noble Voyagers saw them approach and pass. Then came "I Want Your Sex" and "Love Shack"... "Evenflow" and "Morning Glory". Guess who kept tickin' away? Both ships have now left the bounds of our solar system, where they continue to operate and send back details on the great beyond. How did the mission come to be? How do you send a ship to four planets? What has Voyager revealed about our solar system? What messages do they carry for alien civilizations? Looking forward to seeing you there! |

Not official yet, but he just lives down the street, could sleep in his own bed, his co-author will be at Spacefest, he HAS to be at the NSS convention at LAX the next week (he's on the board), and he always does well at Spacefest. If he doesn't come, it'll be news. |

Is the current list of "Astronaut & Other" attendees on the website current? Reading through this thread, I see posts indicating that folks currently listed as attending will not, in fact, be there. Would it be possible to post a current status update on who is attending and who isn't? Many thanks! |

I'm delighted to announce that two new additions have been made to the Spacefest VI Guest Speakers list. Richard Jurek and David M. Scott, authors of "Marketing the Moon: The Selling of the Apollo Lunar Program" (and collectSPACE regulars), will be attending, giving a talk on the Saturday, and will conduct a book signing or two. Information on the authors and their photos will shortly appear on the official Spacefest VI website. Also note that Rick Houston, author of the new Outward Odyssey book "Wheels Stop" will be attending, speaking and signing. Check the Spacefest VI website, as new astronaut and guest speaker name are continually added, with more to come. |

I've had confirmation today that the University of Nebraska Press will be operating a sales stall at Spacefest VI in May, and they will have a limited supply of series books available for purchase and signing by the attending Outward Odyssey authors. These will include myself, Francis French, Jay Gallentine, Kate Doolan, Rick Houston, Michelle Evans, David Hitt and Heather Smith. David and Heather's new book, "Bold They Rise" will be available pre-release at Spacefest. You can get them to sign this and Rick Houston will also be there to sign "Wheels Stop" so you'll have both of the series shuttle books.A number of Outward Odyssey authors will be giving talks on their books over the event weekend, plus there will be a panel discussion comprising all of the series authors on the Saturday afternoon, with some surprise announcements to be made on the future of the series. Keep an eye on the Spacefest VI website for updates and schedules. |

I see that Scott Parazynski, Charles Precourt and Kent Rominger will be in LA on May 4 for an event. And we already know that Thomas Reiter will be at another event on May 7. Any chance of getting any of them to attend Spacefest? The greatest miracle would be if Kim could talk Mike Collins into attending one more Spacefest. We still have our dreams! |

At in-person signings like this, I always like to get large prints (usually 16x20) printed. They make for such great presentations. I just got an e-mail from mpix.com announcing a 50% off large prints sale, for two days only. You could get a beautifully printed (on archival paper) high-resolution photo done for surprisingly little money. There are a number of sources you could use to find such high resolution images, in approximate order of preference (quality of images; ease of searching, etc.):
Or, some of the photo collages I made up a few years ago would be applicable to some of the astronauts. |

Does anyone know, or can someone from Spacefest say, whether anything has been done to arrange a JPL tour? From memory, I think JPL does tours on Mondays and Wednesdays, but names must be submitted three weeks in advance. That means if anything is going to be done it will have to be done within the next four or five weeks. If something is being arranged, how can I put my name down? I assume the day after Spacefest ends (a Monday) would be best. The alternative is the day before it starts (Wednesday). Bottom line: I haven't booked flights yet, but I need to do it soon. It would be unthinkable to travel a third of the way around the world without making an effort to get on a JPL tour. Is there someone better placed than me to take this on? |

No joy. We've sworn off tours. One of our speakers put a JPL tour together. but it's full. JPL says they're booked up until September. We tried to book a tour with SpaceX, but couldn't, even with inside help. A problem is foreigners (and the same is true in Ariz.), gov't is very paranoid. |
