I'm embarrassed to say as a native of AZ, I've never been there. But there are plenty of 'touristy' things there, The best time to go is HellDorado Days in October, but the OK corral, Boot Hill:
Here lies Lester Moore,
four shots from a .44,
No Les, no More
The Epitaph office, several saloons & main st. (paved now) are the ones I know.

Old Tucson, a movie set where many, many 40s, 50s, and 60s westerns were filmed (Arizona, Rio Bravo, Bells of St.Mary's, Cimarron, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Winchester '73, McClintock!, El Dorado, Rio Lobo and many more) is just "round the mountain." TV shows too, like Bonanza, Death Valley Days, and High Chapparal. website. Plan on coming early to Spacefest, or stay late. The $119 daily rate is good for three days before and after. Flying is cheaper mid-week.

I can recommend Tombstone. When I was there in the 90's it was full of history.
I want to visit this western city again soon.

I would suggest that folks plan a day to go see the Pima Air and Space Museum that includes the Air Force Boneyard both which are right there in Tucson.

Also there is the Titan Missile Museum located approximately 25 miles south of Tucson.

About 30 miles from Tucson is the Biosphere2.

All of these are very much connected to the space program. Pima, is the home of some great aircraft, the Vomit Comet, NASA's Supper Guppy, and the B52 that was the used for X-15 tests. The Titan Missile Museum, well there will be a number of astros at Spacefest that road one of those missiles into space. The Biosphere2, a self contained Ecosphere, a requirement for long term living on another planet.

We went to all three after Spacefest 2007 and that was a drive from Phoenix, these are so close for Tucson you will kick yourself if you miss them. I know Kim will post local attraction but I wanted folks to know what a great location Tucson will be apart from Spacefest and the scenic opportunities.

My wife and I spent a day in Tombstone in 2007 (just before Spacefest I). It was a great day out... Boothill, Birdcage Theatre, Gunfight re-enactment, lunch at Big Nose Kates... Lots of history and the main street still has the look and feel of a real Wild West town.

If you decide to go there I wouldn't advise staying at the Best Western in Tombstone... Its a real dump.... both my wife and I wished we'd stayed an extra night at the Hampton Inn in Tucson and just drove down to Tombstone for the day and traveled back to Tucson in the evening.

We had a nice chat with the Sheriff of Tombstone after our car got damaged by some tourists who didn't see our parked car. He didn't want a damn thing to do with the fender bender and said he'd much rather get back to his burger and beer in the bar.

I really like these visits to Tucson. Pima Air and Space Museum and the Davis-Monthan boneyard alone are worth the visit. Nothing quite like seeing a long row F-111s or B-1Bs lined up in the desert.

And the food is great too. There recently was an episode of Man vs Food based on Tucson. I will have to look that up again before I get there.

Here is our poster/logo/t-shirt design, done by Dan Durda. Looks amazingly like one of Mark's photos:

Quite a gap between posts August and today but, if there's a t-shirt design, it must be 100% that it's really happening! Missed first one, round of golf with Charlie Duke in San Diego, how could I not be there (from the UK) in June?!

Next town over from us... in addition to the standard activities (many who actually live in the town have adopted and go about their daily lives reenacting known historical figures) there are usually monthly events. The best in my opinion is Hellderado, which takes place this month.

During June there is normally a gem show. Would also recommend the mine tour and grabbing a buffalo burger. Also a great place to have custom made holsters produced. If you head out to the area, consider starting your day at the Bisbee Breakfast Club...

Well, at least this time I wasn't the one to let the cat out of the bag! Spacefest is definitely happening, June 2-5, 2011, in Tucson. Expect a formal announcement early November. But I can't say much more than that at this time.

Starr Pass is in the shadow of Cat Mountain, at least that's the name I know it by. Cat Mt is rumored to be haunted. According to Indian legend, one of the great spirits inhabits the mountain part-time. It's a nice hike in the daytime, but can be treacherous at night. Many a night-hiker has failed to return from that mountain!

Tombstone is a cool place. Many of the buildings on the main street not only look authentic, they are the real thing. The Earps drank at the Crystal Palace. But the Ok Corral and Boot Hill have been relocated from their original locations. It's a fun place to visit for a few hours. It's really a short drive from Tucson. I was walking on the street there, long hair and beard and all, and was offered a job. All I had to do was dress up in wild-west garb and walk around town.

Down the road a piece from there is Bisbee, just about my favorite little town in Arizona. At one time Bisbee was the largest tent city in the world, to go along with one of the largest open-pit copper mines. After stopping in Tombstone, head on down the road to Bisbee and stay the night ar the Copper Queen Hotel. Ask for "the haunted room."

Arizona seems to be filled with ghost towns and actual ghosts. My last trip to Bisbee we stayed upstairs at the old Stock Exchange. The owner was so involved telling us about the ghost and the hauntings the band was an hour late getting started--we were the band.

Kim has some grand plans for Spacefest III, and a lot of work cut out for me. Guess I'd better get busy.

Tombstone - oh yes - had a great visit there, plus to Pima and the Titan Museum on the back of a roadie around Spacefest 1 - fantastic places to visit other than the bad salsa expereince in Tombstone. Make sure you visit in time for the gunfight reenactment!

I also made a Universal registration. I am going to do fewer autographs this time and go to more of the talks and exhibits (unless Kim and Al H. can come up with some "newbie" astronauts who were not at previous Spacefests). I won't have any grand projects for this event like the "First Step" litho I had autographed by 6 Moonwalkers the last time. I would like to congratulate Kim, Sally and crew for taking on this event for a third time-- they are brave souls!

I am new here, so should I introduce myself? I am a mother of a 14 year old son who has been a "space nut" since he was a very little boy. He's been to Space Camp in Huntsville twice (and is slated to go back next year) and to the one at the Cosmosphere in Kansas (which is awesome, by the way) and is going to the Cosmo Houston camp this summer.

He's also been to a couple of "astronaut" events. A couple of years ago I took him to hear Harrison Schmitt at the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City, and last April we went to the Apollo 13 commemoration at the Cosmosphere.

I bought Universal tickets to Spacefest III for both of us. My question is, we have never been to an event where the astronauts charged individually for autographs. I know he is going to want them all. How much is this going to set me back? Do we all go looking for second jobs to cover this?

Hi and welcome to the community. The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation had their event last week and you can see the astronauts' signing fees here. This will give you a rough idea of what you can expect at Spacefest.

With regards to Col. Aldrin, if you can catch him at a book signing event that is nearby, then it's the cost of the book. I don't know if he will do this at Spacefest or will charge a nominal fee as seen on his website for his signed books. You can always ask.

Buzz would likely be willing to pose for a photo with your son. I saw several people at the ASF autograph show last weekend getting their photos taken with Buzz. The best time to approach him would be a little later in the day when he doesn't have a long line of people waiting for his signature.

In general, most of the astronauts are happy to talk to children and pose for photos...even if the child isn't purchasing an autograph.

We are getting ready to work out the logistics of attending Spacefest as part of our family Summer Vacation. Looking at the Spacefest/Hotel web site I do not see a code for a Spacefest discount. Is there one or should we just book at the rack rate on the web?

Alan, go to the Starr Pass page on the website. Use the link there and book online, otherwise you'll pay the $225 rate, instead of the $119 that we have.

Or, just go here.

Oh, thank you! That was a wonderful event, the Linda Hall one. I am looking forward to seeing you again. Meanwhile the kid is dragging us all to Columbus this weekend to see John Glenn and to go to the Air Force Museum in Dayton. It is wonderful for a kid to have a passion, and I am so glad that he looks up to these astronauts rather than to some of the pop stars and even sports stars out there who really are not particularly good role models for kids!

We've also added a discussion tab to our Facebook page. We'd like your suggestions on guests, speakers, tours, etc.

For all the issues people have raised about Aldrin, in my experience he's always been good with kids and willing to spend some time with them, take pictures, etc., purchases or not. If your kid is a scout, wearing a uniform or some kind of identifier might not hurt either.

ALERT! Southwest Airlines is offering some smokin' deals right now. Take advantage!! $59 to almost anywhere in the USA. Book online web only @southwest.com

Fly into Phoenix if there's nothing direct to Tucson. Then book SWA again for the 15-minute hop down to Tucson for Spacefest III. Phoenix is an SWA hub.
