This topic has been started to post news and post-event reports from Alan Bean's book signings for his two new books: A calendar of these events and other Bean appearances is under Sightings.

We're going to be having an Alan Bean book signing, also, with BOTH his new books. At this point it may be the only public book signing. Publishers have cut way back on book tours.

Will that affect his planned signings at the National Air and Space Museum? I had heard they were being "rescheduled" but thus far there is still nothing on the museum's website. I'm happy to hear Novaspace has the set as well and will be having a signing. I'd much rather go through Kim and give him and Sally the business (for anything, mind you) than anyone else.

Alan will have signed books there, and will be present, but it's unclear at this time whether there will be a formal book signing. (Thanks for the kind words, Aurora.)

Here's the details about ours.

Kim, thank you for the word that Alan Bean will still be appearing at the National Air and Space Museum - I was looking forward to seeing him and was disappointed when those appearances were taken off "Sightings."

Sure, it's nice to see the author (and in this case artist) actually sign your book, but maybe having a pile of pre-signed copies for sale will leave him with more time for some sort of talk.

(At one point he and Aldrin were going to be at NASM on the same day - I hope that goes forward.)

Great - I hope it will be possible to order by mail. I've just canceled my Amazon order for both books.

Unless you are coming to the Alan Bean book signing, or have a friend who is, we can't get your books signed for free.

Alan won't sign hundreds of disembodied books for free. I'd suggest re-ordering from Amazon at their substantial savings, and send them in if you wish to get them signed. (Currently $125, but we're working on that.)

Well, seeing as how I had been planning on going to DC to see Alan again, I may just have to go to Tucson instead. I see a cross-country roadtrip in my future.

The books look great and this grown up kid will be buying both of them.

If someone were to order the book signed and pay a fee over and above the cost of the book, then it wouldn't be 'disembodied' or free. It would be similar to purchasing a print from you, and then having that print signed. You might consider a combo fee that includes the book plus signing. If not, I would appreciate seeing a reduced book signing fee for the new books if I'm obtaining it myself and shipping it down there.

I'd appreciate a lower fee, too, But ultimately Bean makes that decision, not us.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Fair enough. I hope I wasn't coming off as harsh, that wasn't my intention. I certainly appreciate the work you do to give us the opportunity to have material signed.

I was just thinking that since you said above you were 'working on it' in terms of the book signing fee (which I interpreted as possibly lowering it). I thought I would add my input.

While it is a disappointment that the formal signings at National Air and Space Museum have been canceled, the costs of traveling to a signing (for most of us, I assume) are considerably more than the $125 fee. Had I gone to the NASM events, I would have spent more on transportation alone. The signing in Tucson is a good opportunity, in my opinion. Also, Capt. Bean will be at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation show in November, for those able to go who want an in person experience (I would be one of them, so I'll be waiting until Nov.). So my long-winded point is, it all evens out in the end.

The site says there will be a free public book signing. Will people be able to order signed books from you, or if you are unable to attend in person do you have to pay the $125 signing fee for Alan Bean to sign his new books? Thanks.

I knew Novaspace would come up with the perfect solution. I look forward to your announcement and I will most certainly be placing an order.

Count me among the interested. If I can make it fit our (temporarily single-income household) budget, I'd sure love to have a signed copy.

The description of the DVD signing, though, says only that the filmmaker will be signing. Unless you know something I don't?

I was excited to get the email from Kim and Sally today, regarding the Alan Bean signing in August. For those who aren't on the Novaspace mailing list, they are offering a great deal of both new books, signed, for $75. a good deal, in my book (no pun intended!).

I just got off the phone with Sally who confirmed that Novaspace will sell both books signed by Alan Bean for $75 total, including US shipping, to those of us who cannot come to the signing.

Bean will sign the books for free in person at the public signing August 2, and Novaspace is offering a VIP package and reception the day before. They also will have a mail-in signing for other items (base fee $100).

As noted on Sightings and elsewhere on the forum, Alan Bean now has two book signings confirmed at the National Air and Space Museum.

At the first event on July 16, Bean will sign both "Painting Apollo" and "Mission Control, This Is Apollo", the latter with his co-author Andrew Chaikin.

The second event on July 19 is only for "Painting Apollo" (Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins will join him at that event signing their books, too).

The museum is taking absentee orders though as with those in attendance no inscriptions or personalizations will be possible.

Has anyone heard if Alan Bean will be signing the DVD "Alan Bean Artist-Astronaut" that is listed on the Smithsonian website?

You can order both new Bean books, signed and shipped (USA) for $75 through Monday the 20th. We may have some left after our Alan Bean book signing, but we need a cushion, because we have run out of books before, and an angry mob lynched our accountant (not really) but there WAS a lot of anger. July 20 will give us time to order some more in time for the signing.

The Smithsonian Store listed on their website this morning signed copies of Alan Bean's "Painting Apollo" for $39.99 ($35.99 for members). I am informed that their supplies are limited.

That is only to indicate that signed books won't be shipping until July 31. From what I am told, they expect for these to sell out (in other words, if you want to order one or more from them, do so now).

Alan will be here the 31st, so he would have to return to DC next week (he's at home), to sign, so you may get a bookplate.

Also, shipping a 4 lb. book is not included.

Not trying to drum up business...we're getting critical on supply also. I'm just sayin'.

My two cents: Kim and Sally are not only great people, but first class business owners. nothing against the museum, which I am actually a member of, but for a mail order item like this, I'd prefer to deal with Kim and Sally, especially after the strange experience I had at the museum. That said, I just ordered a copy of "Mission Control: This is Apollo" from Novaspace.

My understanding is that Alan already signed the books for the Smithsonian while he was in Washington, DC for his exhibit opening and the Apollo 40th activities. I am not sure why the books aren't available for shipping until July 31st, but it is not because they are waiting his signature.

That said, my sharing the Smithsonian sale information was not to suggest people shouldn't order from Novaspace but just to identify all opportunities available.

No offense taken, Rob. Alan said he had signed 500 books for their website and catalog, but I thought those had been sold previously. I don't understand the wait either.

I wanted to give people a reliable source, as all my dealings with National Air and Space Museum have been universally disappointing. That being said, we only have about 175 combo sets left.

When I spoke to them at NASM they said they were holding shipping until July 31 in hopes of obtaining a resolution to preorders for the Collins’ book signature. They had most of the preorders for all three books and want to at least give notice about Collins’ book when they ship.
