I've done a Spacefest report with many pictures which keep coming in. We'll have video in a few days. http://www.spacefest.info/Report.html
If you have nothing to do for a few hours, try Googling "Spacefest"

Though I was not lucky enough to attend, I do want to say how happy I was with Steve Gruber, aka "Steve G" on cS who took some items to Space Fest to be signed for me. I know I missed the actual experience of meeting these heros, but Steve helped me fill out my collection of signed "Life" magazines. He communicated well with me and actually sent me photos of the items being scanned. It was the next best thing to being there. I want to issue a public "thank you" to him for helping out and being so professional.

Late June for much of mainland Europe, with kids going back late August, so basically assume late June to first week of Sept for UK as European school holidays.

THought I would share this with everyone. When I had a few minutes during the show, I nabbed one of the Spacefest posters, and got it signed by everyone I could. It was a lot of fun to put together. Paul Calle drew a prospecter being shot at by Injuns.... I'll list who all signed it later - but for funsies lets see who can list whom: http://members.aol.com/albatron/poster.jpg
Not everyone who signed it is an astronaut nor celeb, but ALL were celebs in my mind.

Based on many examples I have seen for sale on eBay, the signature at the top just right of the cactus is that of Neil Armstrong. Congratulations!

P.S. Here, I'd better add this:

Ahhh Leon my dear friend, it will never be there or anywhere for sale. The sentimental value is such that far outweighs what I could get for it. Certainly missed seeing you there! I'm sure we'll see you next year.
Good listing there Rob! I didnt see you to add to it!
The ones missing are:
Michael Joner (not ONLY a dear friend but one of the speakers!!)
Jerry Doyle
Clare Johnson (Cernans LOVELY assistant)
Jamye Coplin (John Youngs agent & w/Kerwin)
Hazel Banks (worked with Janye "back in the day" representing the Space Walk of Fame)
I gotta tell ya, Hazel and Jamye are two beautiful ladies - inside and out and a true delight to be around. They certainly elevate YOUR status simply being around them!
Good to see you Rob and Gil also. Not often enough.
LOL Sorry not Neil. Maybe next year.

Claire Johnson has actually signed it, right below Cernan's sig.
(Follow-up: I see - you meant ones missing from Rob's list, not the poster.)
Nice collection of sigs!

That's neat. I didn't even realize someone was taking my photo when I was at Joe Kerwin's table. We were all smiling because I was the first person that weekend to have Jamye sign the photo of her holding the Snoopy stuffed animal during the Apollo 10 walkout. They both had a great laugh when they saw that photo...and Jamye actually thanked me for bringing that pic, because it's a photo she hadn't seen in a LONG time.
Judging by how many others were carrying around that signed photo by the end of the weekend, mine was just the first of several that she signed. (I found out later that the Novaspace table was selling that pic, which gave many others a chance to get a rare signed image.)
For those who haven't seen the image, here it is:

Kim,
I love the picture of Mark from Spacecraft films using a cloaking device in his booth. Didn't know it was a sci-fi event.

Good one! I was worried we'd have a bunch of people show up as Klingons, but it never happened, unless they, too were cloaked and snuck in.
Mark- Mark Usciak from PA took that photo, bracketed by some others of Kerwin and Jamye cracking up over a photo, and her signing it. Although advertised in another thread, it was the best-kept secret at the photo booth.

With some of the other threads talking about the lack of teaching our children in school about the Apollo era, and with the hoax issue popping up from time to time; I'd just like to say thanks to the people that create such events and opportunities as SPACEFEST.
Among all of the astronauts, pilots, guests, artists, vendors and collectors, there was a noticeable group of young people at this event.
They had the unique experience of meeting, and listening to some of the most incredible people in the universe.
That experience is certainly very rare.
The artwork alone was magnificent to see. The host of vendors added to the experience.
Plenty of things for kids to take in and absorb.
This was my second such event. My son had a magical time in Burbank, one of the highlights being having dinner with Charlie Duke, and he had an equally unique experience at SPACEFEST, being a little older and braver, he engaged in conversation with a few more moonwalkers. He’s been talking about it for weeks now.
My point is that these types of events are very important and so powerful. This is the real stuff that kids need to be a part of right now. Some may embrace it and become excited enough to become future space explorers themselves.
Thanks again to everyone who puts these things together.
Aloha

It wasn't anything we set out to overtly do, I think it was a consequence of having it in August, and the varied programming. Many European families came,as well as locals on the weekend.
Unfortunately for collectors, it also meant we lose two important Apollo astronauts, Schmitt and McDivitt.
Both shows should do much more educational outreach to schools (we let teachers and their students in for free Friday, and the teachers made them attend and report on at least one talk.)
Most Phoenix schools had just started, so it was hard for teachers to arrange field trips. Most schools who attended were parochial.
Reaching out to youngsters is the only way to perpetuate the hobby and the space program in general, The astronauts, with few exceptions, love children and that may have partially been the reason they were unusually accommodating at SPACEFEST.

More video (of photographs, using the "Ken Burns" effect). Also, more stills from Randy Sellet and Mark Gross from Autograph Collector magazine.
I keep on getting CDs full of new photos!

I noticed that Autograph Collector magazine interviewed most of the guests in attendance. Have they said anything about whether they will make this footage available at some point, since I suspect they had some questions that directly addressed the autograph hobby and market...something a lot of us on CS would like to hear their perspectives about.

Yes, including artists, vendors, and speakers, but I think the autograph portion is what will make it into an upcoming issue. Mark Gross was one of the most enthusiastic people there. He's kept saying he never had attended anything like Spacefest before.
I guess the video will be on the website at some point...When Mark interviewed me, he asked me how I got the idea (an old idea of mine, but now, as an old man, I have a lifetime of contacts, experience, strings to pull, favors to cash in, and a good credit line) to pull it off.
