Novaspace has noted on Facebook that Astro-Auction will be closing down on Sept. 20 at noon MST. "Just not enough interest to keep it going." |

Too bad. Used to go to Astro-Auction to use their "what's listed on eBay" link even when the auction part was closed. When that linkage was removed shortly after the auction part reopened, I wrote to say it was missed but no change so I stopped visiting. Apparently everyone else did, too. |

It seems as if the notion of online auctions has changed over the past few years. For instance, eBay has essentially turned into a primarily fixed price listing. We saw similar traits on Astro Auction... high starting prices that were a trivial amount below the Buy It Now price. From a buyer's perspective, the allure of an auction is the opportunity to get a bargain, otherwise why bother? Just buy from a dealer at a fixed price and eliminate the games and waiting. In short, it seems sellers want all the advantages of an auction -- the potential of a bidding war resulting in a sky high price -- but none of the risk, i.e., taking a bath on an item with the buyer getting a steal. It all adds up to less than compelling scenario for potential buyers in my opinion. This is not a criticism of the people at Astro Auction because the situation is not unique to them. It's just the way the marketplace has evolved. |
