The launch of a SpaceX rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, will see the Spaceflight SSO-A SmallSat Express mission include a tribute to the late Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) astronaut Maj. Robert H. Lawrence, Jr. USAF, who tragically died in 1967 without ever realizing his goal of flying in space. The ENOCH art project, created by Los Angeles County Museum of Art Art+Technology Lab grant recipient Tavares Strachan, 38, consists of a 24-carat gold canopic jar with a bust of Lawrence. The canopic jar references a practice used in ancient Egypt to preserve the organs of the deceased for use in the afterlife. The jar was blessed at a Shinto shrine in Japan and is recognized as a container for Lawrence's soul. Named at the blessing as "Robert Lawrence-Enoch," the jar incorporates the religious traditions of Jews, Christians and Muslims which centers on the ability of a person's spirit to endure. The term "Enoch" refers to a biblical figure who never experienced mortal death, instead going directly to the afterlife. The canopic jar sculpture will circle Earth for seven years in a sun-synchronous orbit. |
