The National Space Agency of Malaysia (Agensi Angkasa Malaysia, ANGKASA) is close to choosing their two Angkasawans (cosmonauts) who will train for a Soyuz flight to the International Space Station in 2007. |

The minister of science and technology of Malaysia declared the names of 8 semifinalists. Among them 7 men: - Norazlan Shah Mahadi, 36 years, manager
- Kelvin Lim Hock Seong, 25 years, pilot
- Mohammed Faiz Kamaludin, 34 years, pilot
- Mohd Bostami Ahmad, 25 years, designer
- Muhammad Husaini Hashim, 25 years, engineer
- Dr. Syeikh Muszaphar Shukor, 34 years, doctor
- Faiz Khaleed, 26 years, the stomatologist
...and the only woman, S Vanajah, 35 years, the engineer.Now one must select four of them in order to send into Moscow. The names of these four will be released nearer toward the end of this month. The flight of Malaysian cosmonaut is planned in October 2007 (Soyuz TMA-11)! |

The four Malaysian finalists are reported to have arrived in Moscow on Friday for tests at Star City and IMBP. It is said they will be there for 2/3 weeks.The two who will then go for training will be named late May. |

First Malaysian astronaut may fly to ISS in Sept 2007 The first Malaysian astronaut may fly the International Space Station (ISS) in September 2007, deputy head of the Federal Space Agency Yuri Nosenko said after signing a related contract. "Preliminary training of four candidates started on May 15," he said. "They will be trained and examined at the cosmonaut training center in Zvezdny Gorodok and the Medical and Biological Problems Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences until May 30. The main candidate for the flight and his backup will be chosen in August-September 2006. The main phase of preparations for the flight will start in September and last for about one year," he said. A contract on the ISS mission of a Malaysian astronaut was signed between Russia's Rosoboronexport and the Malaysian Defense Ministry. |

ANTARA News reports that Malaysia has announced its first astronaut: Malaysia on Monday unveiled its first astronaut, a 34-year-old doctor who will blast off on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and visit the International Space Station in October 2007.Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was the winner in a nationwide hunt which drew tens of thousands of hopefuls.
