Obviously there are a bunch of images from the Apollo era that we consider as iconic images. I was thinking about images taken during the space shuttle era, and wasn't coming up with too many that I would consider "iconic."Probably the two that stick out the most in my mind are the image of Bruce McCandless in the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) and the image of the rocket exhaust trails just post the Challenger tragedy. Those two strike me as being iconic. The closest I can think of as an iconic shuttle launch image is one of STS-1 launching. Clearly there were a bunch of neat images taken during the shuttle era. Which ones strike you as being "iconic" images? |

The STS-51A "For Sale" shot with both Allen and Gardner. Allen was the one at the end of the RMS. |

STS-7 Challenger in orbit photo of the orbiter from SPAS satellite. Same with STS-114 with the first orbiter pitch over photos. The photo of Atlantis with MIR from STS-71. |

The STS-49 EVA with three astronauts. On May 13, 1992, following the successful capture of the Intelsat VI satellite, astronauts Richard J. Hieb, Thomas D. Akers and Pierre J. Thuot, moved the 4.5 ton satellite, by hand, into the space shuttle Endeavour's cargo bay. |

It looks odd to see three astronauts in the payload bay. So used to seeing two. |

This photo of Michael Gernhardt on a spacewalk during space shuttle Endeavour's STS-69 mission in 1995 has become a widely-used generic image of an astronaut. For example: The New York Post, Forbes, NPR and Kennedy Space Center's Space Visor. |

The well-known shot of Columbia's underbelly taken by astronaut Kathy Sullivan from a T-38 chase plane just prior to the orbiter's landing. I think this was at the end of the STS-2 mission. |

Judy Resnik on the middeck of Discovery during STS-41D with her long hair floating in all directions is certainly an iconic photo to me. |

The EVA spacewalk photo of Michael Gernhardt during STS-69 was also photoshopped by adding a watch on his right wrist for a marketing campaign. |

Yes, that would be high on the list. It was highly anticipated as it was the first time the full vehicle was actually shown in space. The image with the Canadarm extended out of the payload bay in the shape of a seven is truly special. |
