Ernest Borgnine, who played the part of astronaut Harry Booth in the movie The Black Hole, passed away yesterday in Los Angeles.

Probably best known for his role as Lt. Cmdr. McHale in the television series McHale's Navy, the Academy Award winning actor received Best Actor in 1955 for Marty and played in many other features including From Here to Eternity, The Dirty Dozen, Ice Station Zebra, The Poseiden Adventure, Escape From New York and the television series "Airwolf" during a career that spanned more than 60 years.

I remember this movie but strangely enough I tend to associate it with another movie (?) involving a recovered spacecraft, V-GER (Voyager). That's not the case, right?

Nope. That's not the case. "V-Ger" was from "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" (the first Star Trek TOS movie). Voyager was picked up by another much higher intellegent race and returned to the "Maker", seeking sentience.

In any event, RIP, Ernest. You left some great movies for us!

I had the pleasure of working with Ernie for three years on Airwolf. He was one of the most generous, warm, sincere and down to earth people you'd ever meet.

I remember one day while shooting on the backlot of Universal, a tour tram stopped near us and people started yelling out Ernie's name. He went over and spent his lunch break signing autographs and taking photos with everyone. Every actor, except David Hasselhoff, would run the other way when they saw a tram coming because they didn't want to be bothered.

Typically the actors would eat together, but Ernie enjoyed sitting with the great unwashed and he would tell amazing stories about his early days. He was an amazing man who was humble, appreciative, generous and loved talking with everyone.

The word icon or legend is vastly overused in Hollywood, but in Ernie's case, he was a true legend who didn't allow success to change his love of life. He was a real gentleman, which is rare in the industry. RIP

Ok, thanks. I can't even remember seeing a Star Trek movie except for the last one made...

That is exactly how he came across in interviews. I was sorry to hear that he passed away.

Thanks Ernest for a lifetime of entertainment.

A Great Actor. RIP Ernie.

Class act in the film "Marty" and "From Here to Eternity," as Sgt. 'Fatso' Judson.

I'd heard he was a very nice person from several people who worked with him on TV projects before. Crying shame I never got to meet the man.

I forgot he was in "Black Hole"...

My favorite movie he was in was "Emperor of the North," which is the 'Citizen Kane' of railroad movies...

I remember him well in 1965's Flight of the Phoenix and on a more whimsical note I bet nobody here knows he supplied the voice of Mermaid Man in Spongebob Squarepants.

What a great guy to do that at his age for a cartoon.

The sad thing is that in almost every memorial about him I've seen posted on the internet, they referred to him only as 'the voice of Mermaid Man in Spongebob' and didn't even touch on the fact that he did acting for 61 years, and was in a large variety of projects up until the day he died.

I meant no disrespect to Mr. Borgnine. I wanted to show how humble he was that not only would he do serious rolls, but take on a project that would make kids laugh. I think many actors of his age and background would have scoffed at such a "silly" roll. I appreciate that in him. I like people that won't let their ego or pride get in the way.
