I recently was trying to get my DVR up to speed when I came across a recent CSI: Miami episode where the victim was a person on a private orbital spaceflight. Did anyone else catch it? While an interesting idea for an episode, it was full of so many technical flaws that made it worse. They should have really done their research before doing the episode. |

The short answer is yes, it sucked pretty bad. But so did the Law & Order SVU and CI space related episodes.Hollywood (television anyway) doesn't understand space science or culture at all. |

So long as David Caruso can remove his sunglasses while turning his head as he makes a point, several times, I think the producers are OK with the inaccuracies. |

Wouldn't it be nice if the whole world worked that way! |

How ironic. I'm currently in Deerfield Beach, FL at Sleuthfest, a conference of the Mystery Writers Association. I was invited to speak on two subjects: Hostage Negotiations and ....drum roll please... The CSI Effect: Reality v. Fantasy.I used to watch CSI Miami simply because its cool to see Florida scenes. I am no longer allowed to watch it due to throwing shoes at the TV. It has become a phenomenon in criminal justice circles, because people actually believe you can see a murderer's image in the retina of the deceased. I've twice testified in court about this phenomenon. Just for kicks, go to YouTube and search for "David Caruso one liners." I used one of the videos to open my program, with the admonition this alone should keep anyone from watching the show. |

The episode was ridiculous... soon as I saw the "orbiter" I laughed. Nothing more than a jazzed up private jet. How did they expect people to believe it could orbit with two small engines and no re-entry ablative material on the craft whatsoever. Of course, most people are oblivious to space science anyway. I think it probably would have burned up trying to get into orbit considering the speed needed. Cool show, just dumb scripting. And of course they made fun of the shuttle being a "dinosaur." And I saw the SVU episode. The space geek of course turned out to be a crazed murderer. No respect at all for those that love the space program. |

Exactly! The "orbiter" was, from the looks of it, a Gulfstream without a tail.Tons of ridiculous errors! For instance, during the dramatization of the launch, it clearly showed the jet (sorry, it doesn't come close to qualify was an orbiter) going into a retrograde orbit. Plus, I loved the office chairs bolted on the walls! The closest thing that was space-related on the show was the EVA suit (which appeared to be a shuttle EVA suit). Thank goodness they didn't just use a model of a Gulfstream sans tail on a fishing line! Still, it's sad to see people think spaceflight is like this. And Hollywood (with few exceptions) is NOT helping the cause. |

I've passed on CSI since an early episode of the first CSI where they found a body by seeing a bunch of vultures circling. The head guy said "Looks like they smell something good." The body was sitting in the trunk of a car under an awning in the desert and the trunk was shut. They find it, and make another mention of smelling something.Nice idea, EXCEPT that vultures and other similar birds CAN'T SMELL!!! They hunt by sight. As such, if the guy is in the trunk of a car and out of sight, no vulture is going to circle him! Except for the occasional lunacy of an episode or two, I pass on CSI as they just make a few too many dumb research errors. Now NCIS by comparison seems to be a better researched show in spots. Granted they tend to gloss over certain things and also pull plot devices and "Ah HA" moments out of their rears sometimes, but for the most part the scripts seem to be better. For the recent episode involving a dead Navy test pilot with a jet pack, McGee's talk about the history of the Bell jet pack and other similar devices was very well researched and seemed almost spot on. They even threw in mention of Bruce McCandless and the MMU! After that it got more fictional, but it was very refreshing to watch that stuff. Even David McCallum who plays Ducky on the show has been invited to give talks at forensic science conventions. If they respect an actor playing a medical examiner enough to do that, the caliber of the writing must be better then the typical CSI flair. |

Jay, great post, except instead of "rears" surely you meant "gut" -- namely, Gibb's gut -- a frequent convenient plot device. My family and I have become big fans of NCIS, and not just because I enjoy watching Tom Harmon and David McCallum. (I enjoyed Gibbs' throw-away comment that the young Ducky looked like Ilya Kuriyakin!) |

I believe they tried that with a couple of Jack the Rippers victims.Yeah, this episode was so bad that I think I may just end up stop watching it. It just stretched the BS level a little too far this time. |

NCIS is SO much better than the CSI shows, in my opinion. The NCIS cast is fantastic, and the writing, while not perfect, is above average. |
