On January 3, 1969, actor Ken Curtis and his wife (on the left) visited Kennedy Space Center during the Apollo 9 rollout. Curtis played the part of Festus Hagen in the television series 'Gunsmoke'. Who can tell me who the couple on the right is?

I just sent an email to a Clark C. McClelland - who states on his website that he met Ken Curtis at KSC (among many others) so he might know who is in the photo.

Also - according to James Arness's Autobiography he and Ken Curtis visited KSC in the summer of 68 while preparations for Apollo 8 were underway. The man in the photo does kind of look like James Arness.

One final note - the red head does look like Amanda Blake!

Having been a huge Gunsmoke fan (and living not far away from Dodge City and doing business there occasionally), I can tell you that that is not James Arness. He is much bigger. I'm about 50/50 as to whether it is Amanda Blake ("Miss Kitty"). The red hair certainly leans toward Amanda. Perhaps Amanda Blake and her husband?

I thought about Amanda Blake too, but I have a Spaceport News article mentioning Curtis' visit. I can't imagine they would not mention Blake if she was there also.

Who is Clark C. McClelland?

Ed, I found his website and he has a list of all the famous people he met at KSC over the years.

I think I will also start a website listing all the people I have met. Must be possible to bore somebody to death.

Wow, I never knew Joe Walker was the first human in space, climbing the X-15 to over 100 miles altitude.

That's 528,000 feet.

I didn't know, from his astronaut encounter write-ups, that Scott, Irwin and Worden "saw UFOs above the mooon, NASA grounded them."

All times are CT (US)
