Stuart, Florida Police Department release
A Stuart man who was dumpster diving in his apartment complex at Sierra Apartments on January 23rd at 1:45 p.m. found buried treasure on the trash heap. Someone had thrown away a framed photo of a space shuttle that certainly looked salvageable.

When Warren Bendix took the framed photo home he decided to keep the photo but change the frame. When he removed the frame, Bendix found twenty-four $100.00 bills and thirty-five $20.00 bills ($3,100.00) behind the photo.

Mr. Bendix called Stuart Police to report his find. In the event that a legitimate owner does not prove that the money belongs to them Mr. Bendix may claim the money.

As a graduate of Martin County High (of which Stuart is the county seat) I claim the prize.

On a different tale of dumpster diving, I am aware of an item rescued from the trash that would be the envy of many.

I am aware of a rescued plaque presented to a politican which included flown US and Soviet flags from the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project part of the plaque. Also attached is information about the mission with the etched autograph of all five astronauts/cosmonauts.

Finally saw mention of this on the local news, since it's within a few miles of me...

Apparently the photo was not of a Shuttle, but of the launch of Apollo 8. It was traced to an apartment of which the occupant had died - if no next of kin comes forth to claim the money, it may go to the finder.

All times are CT (US)
