Just for interest's sake I thought I'd see if there was interest in starting a thread on what you best space history/space collecting moment was for 2006 since it is so nearly over...For me it was the US trip this year to the UACC show, meeting up with Dave SIxsmith, to do the JSC tour and having the chance to visit the Kansas Cosmosphere and be treated to a visit 'behind the scenes' by Jim Remar and Daniel Bateman for a day. Hard to pick the absolute highlight of that day - the chance to spend a few minutes in the Gemini the Cosmosphere built for FTETTM, (my favourite programme in both senses of the word), of the chance to hold some iconic items in the vault were just priceless moments for my 2006. I have a few great space collecting moments of 2006. One of them has to be the response that Dr. Donald Thomas gave me after I wrote to him. He came to my school in 1st grade, and I was lucky enough to get my picture taken with him. (At that point, I admit, I didn't care about space, and still wanted to be a veterinarian.) I wrote him a letter telling him that I have changed my dreams, and have aimed my sights to space and the military, and that he was my first exposure to the world of space exploration. I also sent him a copy of the picture of us together eight years ago. He replied with a two page handwritten letter, an STS-70 crew picture that he signed, and a patch flown on STS-70, and told me that he hopes to see me at NASA someday. That was my first flown item!That was great, but that isn't my best space collecting moment of 2006. The best is joining the CollectSpace family, and making many new friends. Thank you everybody for your help, kindness and support. I hope to be posting on here from space someday! ------------------

For me it was finding a near mint condition copy of the limited edition, tooled mission leather bound 'History of Rocketry and Space Travel' by von Braun and Ordway.Randy [Edited by randy (December 30, 2006).] |

Best collecting moment of '06? Being given a photograph of Bell X-1 test pilots' Jack Ridley, Fred J. Ascani and Chuck Yeager that was signed by all three (all vintage signatures) by a very kind and generous friend.  This is the jewel in my collection for sure. Other highlights were purchases of Jack McKay and Joe Walker signed X-15 portraits: McKay

My best space collecting moment of the year was finally being able to purchase a lunar surface flown page from Florian.It's my first lunar surface artifact (and probably my last !). Best collecting moment of 2006: acquiring Dale Gardner's STS-51A flown two-piece flight suit from the estate of his now closed hometown museum.Best space history moment of 2006: standing in MOCR-1 (FCR-1) as it was brought back to life as the International Space Station's new mission control, surrounded by legendary flight directors including Chris Kraft and Gene Kranz. Most exciting space news moment of 2006: Staring at the screen after performing a trademark search on a lark and realizing that I was looking at the name of NASA's next moonship. Most rewarding space moment of 2006: Watching the community here grow faster and stronger than it has been in the seven years since collectSPACE came online. Thank you all for a very memorable, very proud 2006! |

Best Moment: Winning a cover flown on the third flight of the D-558-I Skystreak in 1947 at Muroc (now Edwards) and signed by legendary test pilot Gene May.Worst Moment: Realizing that the guy I beat out for the cover was CS's resident recipient of Scotsman jokes, and a good friend. Mine would have to be meeting up with Garry at the NASM and meeting my first astronauts - Wally Schirra, Tom Stafford, and Gene Cernan. |

1. AAPG Field Trip at SpaceCenter Houston with Jack Schmitt; being able to discuss the mission with him, and maybe even better talking about lunar geology and rocks2. UACC in San Antonio; lots of interaction with the astronauts and other guests, and meeting some wonderful new people (giving Guenter a ride to the airport) 3. The Unsung Heroes panel discussion held at Clear Lake City-County Freeman Branch Library sponsored by CollectSpace with author Billy Watkins, Fred Haise, Rosemary Roosa, Gemini and Apollo spacesuit technician Joe Schmitt, and Apollo mission planner Rodney Rose. |

There were too many this year to pick one, so if I may, I will use Robert’s format and give the highlights.MY BEST SPACE EVENT: Joining cS and posting for the first time after being an avid reader since its inception, thanks for the encouragement Robert. BEST COLLECTION MOMENT: Obtaining an Ed White autograph which completed my objective of having a signature for all of the flown astronauts from Shepard’s Freedom 7 flight to the last Shuttle “test” flight STS 4. BEST COLLECTION ITEMS: Contractor’s Grumman lunar module and the Rockwell CSM/LES. BEST REAL HARDWARE VIEWING: Getting up close to the Gemini XII spacecraft at the Cosmosphere and having my picture taken with it. Thanks Jim! BEST ASTRONAUT ENCOUNTER: Meeting Jim Lovell at his and his son’s restaurant (Lovell’s) in Lake Forest (spent a half hour talking space), including having him sign my picture of me and his Gemini spacecraft. BEST LIVE SPACE EVENT: Watching the STS 116 night launch from the Banana River site. Thanks Brian! MOST EMOTIONAL SPACE EVENT: The 20th year memorial for the Challenger crew at KSC.

Seeing a talk and autograph signing afterwards from Mike Melville at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. He was probably the best speaker I've seen in a long time. Go see him if he shows up near you!Tom
