Do any UK CS'ers (of a certain age  ) remember an offer for 4 (or was it 5) large posters showing scenes from the Apollo 8 mission. One was definately the earthrise, one the CM floating on the ocean after splashdown, one the launch (?) and the other(s) ?? Seem to recall they were a free offer by collecting the wrappers off tins of Spaghetti Hoops (or something). Am I imagining this or did any of you take advantage of this offer? Steve |

Hi Steve,I remember that offer and indeed ordered a set of the posters. Alas, at the tender age of of 11 I did not treat them with the respect I would do now; cellotaped them to the wall, ripped them, etc etc and they have long since gone. Regards, Rick |

Hi Steve,
same here I used and abused the posters. Somewhere in the vaults I may have an original ad from a kids magazine (me being a kid at the time...and an even bigger one now). Remember the Apollo mission decals free with wrappers from Super Mousse ( a sort of Milky Way imposter). I got sick eating those bars just to get the decals. Alas I do not have them anymore either. Way back then decals were for adorning school books,bags etc and posters for bedroom walls. Happy Days!!

Hi Nick,Yes I remember the Supermousse offer as well. Also I seem to recall Apollo collectors cards free with Walls 'Sky Ray' ice lollies "Sky Ray your Highway to the Moon" Didn't PG Tips tea do some spaceflight related card collection also? Steve |

Steve - PG Tips did do the card collection,called "The race into Space".I think they were issued in 1973.I'm sad enough to still have mine stuck into the official booklet upstairs. |

This thread brings back so many memories. I remember well receiving the Apollo 8 posters (they arrived in a distinctive triangular tube). The one I like the most was of Anders, Lovell & Borman (in that order left to right) in the Apollo CM mission simulator. Alas, I have lost them over the years.Did any of you get the free Rand McNally (1:2,300,000) map of the Moon. If I remember correctly you had to save up wrappers from Carr's chocolate biscuits! It was a beautiful map and I still have mine in readiness for Project Orion. What about the Shell Man of Flight sixteen coin set which covered everything from Icarus & Daedalus through Apollo 11. I used to drive my Dad mad going to the gas station every other day to refuel in order to get a coin!. Shell issued the series in the spring of 1970. Hi John,Yes I remember the triangular packaging also. A bit like one of those huge Toblerones (!) Do you recall the product that the offer was in connection with? I've got it in my head it was Spaghetti Hoops for some reason (!!) My moon map was by Hallwag and was my runner-up prize from the Apollo 11 competition in the Daily Mirror. Sadly I didn't win first prize which was a trip to the Cape (from the UK all expenses paid) to see the launch of Apollo 12. Cheers Steve |

Ah great memories. Those were the days when a giveaway was more than just a chance to "star" in Big Brother and become a C-list celebrity .
Yep, I've still got the Shell coins and the PG Tips cards! Parents decided to have a loft clear-out last year and fortunately (for them!) they kept my 2 boxes of space stuff. I'm not sure if the Ap8 posters are in there but there's plenty of newspaper clippings and supplements covering late Gemini missions onwards. It has inspired me to have a rummage this weekend. what a 'Carry on' you've started with this topic(after the ooh Matron! from the last post I was going to chip in with rummaging through drawers over the weekend, seeing what popped up etc but thought better of it). I too have a set of 'Man in Flight' coins. We didn't have a car in those days....I had to speak (grovel) really nicely to the lady at the petrol station and trade spares with the kids who's parents did have a car.

Hi Steve,I can't remember if it was spagetti hoops or what! Around 1967 (I was ten) one of the ice cream companies had a competition of sorts and first prize was a trip to the Kennedy Space Center. The lucky winner wrote a letter which was published in Look and Learn magazine. At the same time they published the address for the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston and it was as a result of that I started my correspondence with NASA (October 1968)which has continued to this day!I have been able to keep every MSCL litho and fact sheet. |

Hmmm. I still have the tea cards stuck in the booklet. I also have the set of 10 Apollo patches, each one with a "Wall's" tab on it. Were these from the mousse or were they from sausages? However I do still have the original set of Apollo 8 posters plus a photo of them on my bedroom wall in the early 70s. Strangely I'm almost sure that I've got the triangular box as I used it to keep rolled up posters. I will check on my next visit to the loft.Also in the loft....copies of the special colour supplements issued by the London Times newspaper for Apollo 8 and 11. No, these were not colour magazines but very early versions of full size colour newspapers. Alan. |
