I'm currently involved in proofreading a book draft and something came up that I cannot immediately answer. Does anyone have the Life magazine issued after the Gemini 4 or GT-4 mission in which Ed White talks about being "red, white and blue all over"? I need to know the exact wording of the sentence containing this quote from Ed, as it looks as if a word may be missing that needs to be restored. Many thanks if you can assist. Colin |

According to The Official Site of Edward White, the quote was from the June 25, 1965 issue of Life: "I felt red, white, and blue all over." I have the June 18 issue, featuring "16 pages of fantastic color - the space walk." I skimmed the article, but couldn't find the phrase. Also, I searched the air-to-ground transcript over at http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/mission_trans/gemini4.htm for "all over" and for "blue", but couldn't find a reference (although I didn't search the PAO transcript). |

Hi Mike,Many thanks. A well-known NASA identity who is mentioned in the manuscript says in there that in the LIFE article, Ed White remarked "I felt red, white and blue all over when I stepped out the spacecraft." I'm checking that the word "of" might have been missed from this quote. But of course now I'm wondering if it's an actual quote from LIFE or just the recollection of a quote. Does anyone have that 25 June issue that they could look at for me? Colin [Edited by ColinBurgess (October 06, 2006).] |

I don't think there is a 25 June issue of LIFE. I have the 28 June issue of LIFE International, which contains "10 pages of fantastic color", according to the cover. I could not find the quote you are looking for. The photos in the article are blown-up 16mm frames, no Hasselblad photos, so I expect a later (earlier?) issue has the Hasselblads.Ed Hengeveld |

Colin,I don't have that LIFE magazine. But try walking the date out a week or ten days from the events reported. Subscription-based magazines generally bear a date that relates not to when they went to press but to when they will reach the subscriber--that week-out date also gives them a longer shelf-life on the newstands for readers wanting to stay current. For example, the TIME magazine that first published news of Project Mercury? It was in the hands of subscribers the last week of January. That's when the first group of candidates was flying to Washington for phase two of the 1959 selection process. That's why so many candidates recall reading about their "top secret" orders in the news before they were briefed at the Pentagon! The date on the cover? February something--IIRC, February 7. |

Colin,I don't know about the quote but Paul Rigby's cartoon, depicted in Tracking Apollo to the Moon by Hamish Lindsay on p105 is a lot of fun! Chris. |

Does anyone know of a book of Rigby's space cartoons? I love the ones scattered around "Tracking Apollo to the Moon" |

John, I have asked that question weeks ago but apparently there's no book. I have also tried to find if he's still alive and if he can be reached in one way or another, without success. It's such a shame- his cartoons are hilarious (my favourite: the moon rocks!). Chris. |

Colin, I am looking at my copy of the June 25, 1965 issue of Life magazine (vol. 58, no. 25). The Gemini 4 coverage stretches from page 22-26 and resumes on pp. 70A-70B. The sectioned "written" by Ed White is titled, "I felt red, white and blue all over." In describing his EVA (p. 70B), he wrote: "Speaking of colors, I myself felt red, white and blue all over." Hope this helps! ------------------ John Charles Houston, Texas |

Colin-Sorry for the delay - John answered for you. I had the June 18, 1965 issue and didn't find the quote. Obviously I need to keep looking for more old LIFE magazines. Tim |
