Hi Paul,I wish like you the World Cup was coming home but on the evidence of the matches so far...... there are too many teams better than us standing in our way. The sad thing is, we have a team capable of winning it; they just need to start producing the goods. Regards, Rick. PS. You may be a mere snip of a youngster. I remember as a kid watching England win it in 1966 on a tiny black and white tv at home. At half time I even had time to go to the local newsagents to buy a "World Cup Willie" scrapbook. .... I had hours of fun playing with Willie!!!! For the uninitiated, World Cup Willie was the English lion mascot for the entire event. |

Not to forget Italy vs Ukraine England vs Portugal My guess: Germany vs Argentina 3 : 2 after penalties France vs Brazil 1 : 3 Italy against Ukraine 2 : 0 England vs Portugal: As the game starts, the English team will look at the Portuguese in such a fierce manner that the Portuguese will immediately fall down on the ground and play injured. Thus, the referee will immediately disqualify the entire English team. Half an hour later, Portugal will get their first goal. Best wishes from the Netherlands , Kirsten

By the way, Kirsten, what a good guess, you nearly hit it on the spot! If Germany makes it to the final, Thomas Reiter may see the vast amount of waving flags from space on July 9th. |

England´s the home of football, thanks for that, but without offending anyone, there´s one essential rule to the game: Germany always wins penalty shoot outs and England always fails. But maybe in the semifinals rules are broken and I may look as a complete idiot... Now football´s traveling home. I think it´s mostly due to the team manager´s tactics, which can only be regarded as confused. I still have no clue why Beckham was exchanged shortly after break, was it a real injury or just physical weakness? Information needed! Just an hour to launch of STS 121 and still counting. Should fit well in the break of Brazil vs France! |

Hi Folks,In response to my previous post "well almost". After Portugal missed 2 of the penalties i thought we had it in the bag and i also agree with Ian but at least Owen Hargreaves can hold his head high. And Shuttlefan i believe it was a problem with Beckhams ankle, he didnt seem to have a good game before then anyway possibly relating to his ankle, anyway good luck Germany i`m still gunning for you. Hi, so good old Europe rules: Italy Germany France PortugalLes Bleus kicking off Brazil - quite amazing. The Brazilians deserved loosing this match and the old man Zidane is king of the day. But no shuttle launch after first period, funny world, we´ve got a summer as hot as hell here with sunshine all day and clouds scrubbing the launch in Florida. Now let´s face two boring days without championship football - by the way, anyone seen my wife lately? |

Good morning everybody! There is an intertesting pattern regarding the championship:1962 South America (Brazil) 1966 Europe (England) 1970 S.A. (Brazil) 1974 Eu. (Germany) 1978 S.A. (Argentina) 1982 Eu. (Italy) 1986 S.A. (Argentina) 1990 Eu. (Germany) 1994 S.A. (Brazil) 1998 Eu. (France) 2002 S.A. (Brazil) 2006 Eu. (?) So it´s always alternating, only before 1962 it looked somewhat different. So you can bet some money on Argentina or Brazil for the 2010 tournament. |

Well all i can say that we lost but we was robbed, Ronaldo i beleive was under instructions from his Manager to get Rooney sent off, he head butted him before the start of the game and when the tackle went in, the Referee was not even going to card him until Ronaldo went running to him, all i can say is that i hope the hosts go on to win it.Footballs not coming home, but England are. Hi Paul,I wish I could agree with you but we were simply not good enough. I think we all succumbed to the hype that accompanied this competition. Rooney I know was not fully fit but prior to the competition he was being hailed as a new Pele. He played in 4 games and did not score a single goal......... Owen is not the player he was 4 years ago and apart from his goal what did Beckham do....? I'm sorry my friend, I am as patriotic as the next man but we must face facts. We have a crop of excellent players most of which did not rise to the occassion and which were poorly managed. I don't think there is the passion to win like there was in 1966. Every one of those players, even Walcott, now has the terrible prospect of going home to cry into their millions! Graeme Souness summed it up well several years ago after a poor performance. "How do you motivate a room full of millionaires?" I think English football has been riuned by big money. Pay all the players £250 a week, with win bonuses of £75,000.... per match We would soon seen a different approach! Regards,
Rick |

That is a very accurate description of the game today Rick. You also mention about the country being taken on by the hype... the same thing happened with Scotland in 1978 when we truly BELIEVED we were going to win the world cup in Argentina. The calibre of players we had back then were all true greats of the game and now with the millionaire syndrome all we have are a bunch of muppets that clearly have no passion or desire to play for their country. After watching last nights match between Brazil and France all I can say is I hope the French win the tournament! Zinedine Zidane is an absolute genius and surely ranks up with Pele amongst the all-time greats of world football. Onto another subject though, that of tennis... Scotland's own Andy Murray DESTROYED Andy Roddick in the third round at Wimbledon.. Roddick was the #3 seed and is a two-time finalist at the All England Club. This will be a massive boost to Murray's belief and lets hope that come next Sunday we can be cheering on a Brit in the final! |

Well said Rick, the simple question is how do you motivate these highly paid players to be proud wearing their national shirt and fighting for it. They know that with a 30 second commercial for a new energy drink they can earn 10 times their promised championship bonus. So what reasons can they have running for their lives without asking for the money? Each of the semifinalists had their special motivation: Germany - just look at the crowds inside and ouside the arenas, no more words needed. France - They may have thought: so you tell us the old men, and everybody´s awaiting Zidane´s definitely last match, so let´s see how it goes ... Italy - they are in such deep trouble cause of this abhorrent fraud story of their national league, the may want to show the world that Italian football is surely more than goals for money (and it surely is) Portugal - they missed European championship so close, that they want to grip it this time ,and for most players it may be the last chance. Christiano Ronaldo is desperately trying to get rookie of the tournament (but I think, it´s Podolski)I think Brazil was definitely to saturated this time, they can play as bad as they like, the whole world still will regard them as football´s cream of the crop, but for me this was the disappointment of the championship. Keep on watching! Chris |

Good point Rick. I bet the players are more gutted by not winning their £300,000 bonuses than anything else. As for the manager.....well the last 5yrs have been the best example of the Emperor's New Clothes. £25 million paid to this philandering fool by an even greater bunch of incompetents...the FA. Money has ruined the so-called "working man's game" in a way which fortunately hasn't yet happened to rugby. Despite the Portuguese play-acting we SHOULD have won with the latent talent we have.Off to wash the St George's flag out of my hair now. Paul |

Paul,Having seen how excited you have been following this world cup, my heart goes out to you after yesterday. I've only been a sporadic follower this time around, and yet at the end of yesterday's nail-biting game I had to shed a tear, to see those completely exhausted England players slumped on the field, some of them crying. I guess if you have to go out of a competition, there's a certain honor in going out that way - playing a full ninety minutes, then another half-hour, with the final only being decided on penalty kicks. It's essentially a draw, after which they have to decide somehow to finish it by playing an essentially different game altogether. To fend off Portugal when you've lost your key striker and are one man down was an impressive feat in itself. I was invited to a San Diego Padres' baseball game against San Francisco later that night, and to watch a middle-aged, overweight Barry Bonds huffing and puffing around a field while the crowd loudly booed him because of his alleged steroid abuse and coverup, really brought home the atheticism and endurance I'd seen from both sides in that World Cup match earlier in the day. Well, looking forward too. Got two countdown clocks running today, one ending a little earlier for STS 121, and one for beginning of the match. Had been to England in May and saw already all these cars topped with little flags. Made some joking remarks on it and ... all right, got two adjusted at my own car now. Nearly every second car has got them now, a week further, and you won´t get a driving permit for an unflagged car. If we make it to the final and if Thomas Reiter makes it to orbit I´ll go out tonight with the driving flags to take part in one of the celebration corsos (or corsi, to use proper Italian). If we don´t make it, no more pizza and pasta for the rest of my life (or at least one week). Best wishes Chris

Would have posted sooner but have only just got back from Germany where I was privliged enough to watch all Australia's games plus the Italy Ukraine game. Can an englishman explain to me how Graeme Poll is the best ref in the world when he can't even get the right name on the yellow card. As for the italy penalty against us (Australia)that was well worth an oscar. But the best game was certainly the Germany italy game which was worthy of te final. |
