I was the lucky bidder on lot #429 from the April 2002 Aurora auction and would like to get some more information on Dr. Stein from the Naval Research Institute. Has anyone ever read about him or a reference to him and his role in the training of the Mercury 7? |

Your question piqued my interest, so I looked through my books written by or about the Original 7 and the men who worked with them and I couldn't find any referrences to a Dr. Stein. The books I looked through were Leap of Faith, Failure is not an Option, We Seven, Schirra's Space, John Glenn-a Memoir, Moon Shot, Flight and Deke!. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. |

The most authoritative book on Project Mercury must surely be "This New Ocean: A History of Project Mercury" (SP-4201). The 32 -page index contains no reference to anyone called "Stein" but there IS a reference to Lt. Col. George R. Steinkamp in the context of space cabin simulation tests in the late 1950's. I would be fairly confident that there was no "Dr Stein." | |
