Here is a category it would be nice to have Wayne set up on his site.

Favorite Image of the Space Race.

My personal favorite two are:

Apollo 8 "Earthrise"

Apollo 11 "Visor" (The full body shot of Aldrin standing in front of the small crater with Neil reflected in the visor)

I won't go into why, I think both images speak for themselves.

Great idea Doug! But the survey site I use only allows me to list up to 30 answers that I have to choose in advance. So whats say everyone list their favorites in this forum?

I really need to give it some thought but the one that comes immediately to mind is the B&W Earthrise from A8. I just happen to love the great B&W photography during the Apollo program as they remind me of Ansel Adams.

My two favorites are the boot and bootprint from Apollo 11 and Apollo 15 commander Dave Scott at the 15 landing site.

There are a few favorite images that I would like to submit.

1. Jim Irwin salutes the Flag at Hadley Base. The flag, the LM, The lunar rover, Jim, Mount Hadley in the background. All beutifully framed and shot by Dave Scott.
A classic.

2. The shot taken on Apollo 17 showing the entire Taurus Littrow valley, the earth, a large bolder, and if you look carefully, the little tiney dot in the back ground is the LM. I like it bacause of the stark beauty of the lunar landscape. But, also because it shows just how far that Cernan, and Schmidt ventured from their home base.

3. The photo taken on Apollo 7 showing the state of Florida with the sun shinnig on the water. Wally Schirra refers to it as his "Victory at Sea photo".

4. Then there is the "Ride 'em Cowboy" picture of Richard Gordon sitting astride the Agena on Geminii 11.

5. The "Beat Army" photo taken during the Geminii 6 & 7 rondavous is a nice one.

There are many others, but that is all that come to mind right now at 1:33AM on a Friday night.

My favorite images are;

Earth over boulder at apollo 17 station 2. This picture should have been in 'Full Moon'.
And;
Apollo 15 LM 'Falcon' on the moon in the sunshine with the mountains in the back.

Why don't we vote for our favorite landingsite too!

P.s: there is no earth in this panorama of the entire Taurus-littrow valley Ed is talking about.

The one picture that comes to mind is the one taken by Jim McDivitt of Ed White floating outside Gemini 4 with the spacecraft reflected in his visor, holding the hand-held maneuvering gun.

I could probably think of at least one favorite from each mission along with half of the photos in "Full Moon"! That being said, I'll vote for Apollo 8 Earthrise, John Young jumping salute, Schmitt, Earth, and flag, and either Collins or Duke suit-up photos. Such great facial expressions. They always make me want to cheer and say "right on!" - Mike

I had to pull out that Apollo 17 photo showing the Taurus Littrow valley panarama. And sure enough, no Earth! That is how I remembered it, with the earth hanging right up there. I was so sure it was there. Oh well, it should have been there. But it is still a breath taking view just the same.

Ed,

It is a great image.
On the end of the NASA tape'On the shoulders of giants' about apollo-17 you see this picture and yes there is the earth in the sky but i think they must have put it in later.

Any image of Jack Schmitt on the lunar surface ... a triumph sending a scientist into space ... as later done on Skylab & STS ...

Both the Apollo 8 Earthrise and the Apollo 11 earthrise with the upperstage of Eagle returning always capture me. I would note that I recall reading that Apollo 17's full Earth photo remains the most requested photo taken -- so that might reflect popular opinion.
In the end, I am not sure any single picture really surpasses all others. Just this weekend (while driving to meet Alan Bean), I gave my daughter to look through an album with a whole set of photos. We spent a good portion of the drive having her asking me about each picture and my narrative reply detailing the stories behind each photo. In the end, she selected the Apollo 11 photo mentioned above for Capt. Bean to autograph for her -- I cannot argue with the choice.

This is a good question to ask, but a hard one to answer!

From the Gemini Program, I like the one of Ed White on EVA, where he has the "gun" and the background is nothing but clouds. I also like the one of Buzz Aldrin climbing out of the capsule for his EVA, and half of his face is lit up from the Sun.

From Apollo, there are a lot. But if I had to choose, I would go for the classics: Buzz Aldrin on the Moon with Neil in his visor, and Earthrise from Apollo 8. I like all of the astronaut with flag photos as well.

First of all..., greetings and best wishes to all!

One (of my many) favorites is Gene Cernan's shot of Jack Schmitt near the U.S. flag, the staff of which is pointing at the earth overhead. To me it captures it all..., the elegantly simple composition of our beautiful planet suspended in the pitch black void, a human being triumphantly yet humbly standing on another celestial body, and my favorite flag symbolically pointing at the good earth. It doesn't get any better than that! To me, this photo seems to quietly yet confidently whisper "Look what we have done", not just as Americans, but as humans.

Also, as a hardcore space buff, I appreciate the effort taken by Gene to take that photo. If I recall correctly, he actually held the Hasselblad upside down to get the shot, not to mention having to sort of squat down in that bulky pressure suit to get the angle. I mean, it's one thing to take decent documentation photography when it's attached to your chest, but to literally "shoot from the hip" and come up with a priceless moment like that is something. That photo was just meant to be!

My current favorite picture is this one: http://www.geocities.com/tegwilym/ksc/saturn/tomsaturn.jpg

I have wanted to stand under this thing all my life and finally did it last January!

Oh, you mean acutual SPACE related pictures?
Hmmmm.....I think that would have to be one of the Apollo 11 ones. I really like the one that shows Aldrin's boot slightly lifted off the surface with the footprint showing beneath. That picture just symbolizes the entire moon landing effort in one simple photo.
I have lots of favorites though, so this is kind of tough thing to decide on!
