Occasionally questions regarding Apollo lunar landing sites comes up from time to time, with the main inquiries being something like, "was there a mission that was supposed to explore Shroeter's Valley, or Copernicus, or whatever?" or "where would have Apollo 18 or 19 or 20 have landed?" etc. To find answers and present them in a useful, coherent format, I generated the below chart (click on image for PDF). It depicts the chronological "evolution" of Apollo landing site candidates. I searched relevant publications, periodicals, GLEP (Group for Lunar Exploration Planning) and ASSB (Apollo Site Selection Board) meeting minutes, and other literature for the raw data. Only candidate sites that were tied to a specific Apollo mission are included. The list is comprehensive, but by no mean complete as there are still key GLEP and ASSB meeting minutes that have not been digitized and posted on the internet. This chart is presented to collectSPACE. I respectfully request that it not be copied, distributed, or published elsewhere, either digitally or physically. Enjoy. |
