Before Alan Shepard's Mercury flight, John Glenn placed a sign in the spacecraft that said "No Handball Playing in this Area." It is depicted in "The Right Stuff," and a still shot is used in "From the Earth to the Moon."

My question is if any photos exist of the real event, or even of the movie version? I ask as we are looking for a photo of this for the Grissom Air Museum. Thank you in advance.

I'm pretty sure I remember this photo being in the juvenile book Americans into Orbit by Gene Gurney (I think), published in the early 60s.

Apparently, Gilbert was wrong. I just looked through my copy of Americans into Orbit but didn't find that photo.

I have a pretty extensive collection of MR-3 pre-launch images, none was found in my files.

It was a scene that in my opinion was pretty hard to photograph. The card was on the instrument panel and Shepard saw it when he was settled in his couch. Then Glenn reached in and took the card off, according to what I read. Try making a good photo of that. I'm pretty sure such a photo does not exist...

Ed has a good point about a photo not being available of such a fast-changing scene.

A painting, however...

If you go spaceraceartifacts.blogspot.com, scroll down a bit, you will find a picture of the actual "no handball" prop sign used in FTETTM...might want to contact them!

I heard of this story a few times over the years. While I'm sure it happened, I also never saw a photo of it.

I doubt there was a photo taken. Who would have taken it? Shepard? He didn't have a camera on him. Glenn? I'm sure he wasn't carrying a camera, either and I'm sure he didn't hold it up for the whiteroom photographer to see with the seriousness of what went on in that room that morning.

I'm sure the sign was quickly tossed into the garbage. Now as for the crayons that Grissom handed Shepard? I like to know if they still in existence?
