It seems with the unfortunate closing of Space World USA, their asset liquidation has flooded the market with just about every kind of modern Cape Kennedy Medals patch ever made. Just this past weekend, Florida Auctions (via Proxibid.com) auctioned off over 300 lots of their assets in the form of patches from mixed lots, single lots of 25-100 duplicates as well as large lots of First Day Covers, pins and other items. I've been noticing a large number of similar groupings and singles of CKM patches on eBay in recent months as well. The mixed lots of 25-60 patches were going for an incredibly low dollar amount at auction, usually $8-12. Most were purchased by an ambitious bidder, but there were many bargains to be had by others I presume. The first day covers went about the same range, up to $25 in some cases, but those were much older. It would seem that the value of most of these patches will be bottomed out for a while as they reappear on eBay? Am I correct in that a majority of these patches were produced by CKM? |

Yes, overall, you would be correct. CKM, though, did manufacture other aerospace-related patches for space vendors as myself under contract. Just about all of my produced cloth patches were authorized by aerospace companies, space foundations, and other organizations that had approached my company for such proposals. In many instances CKM was contacted by my firm to produce, under official aerospace contracts, many of the different patches that were supplied by SpaceCoast Cover Service. |

I would have thought the CKM material most likely comes from the estate of Tom Foley, the owner of CKM who passed away recently (see this thread). It was mentioned there that he had an outbuilding packed with patches and other material, and that his daughter would be selling the inventory. I've already seen some material on eBay but it's clear that when these bulk purchases at the recent auction get turned around onto eBay there will be a flood. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. The most modern Apollo set that CKM produced (see this thread) included a very nicely executed Apollo 9 patch that has always been popular with collectors, so hopefully we'll see a supply of these appearing. |

Man, they just keep on a coming. Some of my search filters are just clogged with nothing but gobs of these devalued CKM patches with no end in sight. For the non-faint of heart, this link will show you a screen cap of one my usual ebay filters showing how many of these patches showed up in the past few hours. (very large image) | |
