Just witnessed an eBay auction where a batch of supposedly run of the mill STS mission patches along with a bona fide original AB Emblem STS-114 patch go for $255. Is the official original 114 patch really that valuable? Anyone else see this on eBay?

Yes, and I bid for this lot, and was out bid by a long way. I was gob smacked!

I would of said about $30 to $50 for the original STS-114 AB Emblem patch.

I would think that the 114/Atlantis patch is about the same an STS-51E/STS-101. I think they are out there but a lot of people do not know what they have.

I know there were a lot of the 114/Atlantis decals that were given to the crews that were on Columbia recovery teams.

It seams I was wrong about the possible value of this patch! The second one of these original STS-114 patches listed by the same seller, has just broken through the $100.00 mark, and is still rising with 11 bids from 5 unknown bidders. This seller still has two more of these patches yet to list. (A nice little earner?! Or are we patch collector being mugged?).

I have to say I am a little suspicious about the bidding activity on this patch. As with the previous patch lot from this seller (which went for $255) there was a lot of bidding from 2**a (private) and a final bid retraction from him/her of $299. Classic shill technique. Experience tells me this auction just doesn't feel right and personally, I wouldn't go near it.

Yes, I agree with you Mike, it's looks and smells very fishy? That is why I ended my last post with, "Or are we patch collectors being mugged?"

That patch lot now stands at $138.50 with 13 bids from 6 unknown bidders.

This auction has just ended with the final price being $190.50 with 15 bids from 7 unknown bidders. I am gob smacked again!

And of course now another set is relisted (and with a Buy It Now of $250).

The bid history looks really fishy... 5 bids from 2***a, each with increasing increments, 2nd highest bidder, and they also threw down a higher bid which was retracted?

And now a fourth set including the original STS-114 patch has just been listed. But these last two listings are open listings so we can see who is bidding.

Hopefully 2***a (private) will not be bidding on these two lots.

I have removed the $250.00 Buy It Now option by placing a minimum bid.

Has anyone tried reporting either of the older auctions to ebay for shill bidding? After an auction closes, you can still report listings by this user by replacing the item # in this link.

Although since they're already closed, I'm not sure if eBay would investigate or not without directly contacting customer service. I don't see any way that 2***a could have been legit, especially if it happened at least twice.

Yes, the winning bidder of the first auction has contacted eBay and has started the ball rolling.

Just spoken to an eBay representative and bidder's 2***a (private) selling, buying priviliges and is account have been blocked as a result of illegal bidding.

The person with the auction must have purchased full block of them since there are two more sets up with them.

Yes the seller had four of the original STS-114 patches, plus another four of most of the other mission patches he has listed so far. The source he aquired them from was an engineer who worked for NASA.

Ugh, seriously?

In 160795224455, now we have .***r (0) is doing the same thing 2***a was. No bid retractions this time, but they increased at increments and stopped at 60.

And in the other set, 400295566709, the bid history was set to private. But judging by the bid time stamps, it looks like .***r (0) did the same thing on that auction too.

Suspicious. I'd still say stay away from these auctions (or at the least, bid with caution).

The first of tonight's lots has just ended with a final price of $102.00 with 21 bids from 6 bidders.

All but two of the bids were from novice bidders. The winner having a feedback of only (12), who bid twice. The runner up with (2), who only bid once. The third place with (0), who bid 8 times. The fourth place also with (0), who also bid 8 times.

I don't think there was any foul play this time, but the end price was still a high one.
Though saying that the other lot is currently at $86.00 with 12 bids from 4 unknown bidders, plus my first bid to remove the Buy It Now of $250.00.

The second lot tonight also ended at $102.00 with 17 bids from 5 bidders, (4 unknown).

What can I say? The finishing price is still very high for this STS-114 original patch. I'm just wondering how long these high prices will continue when this seller lists the rest of these hard to find patches that he has?

Kevin - I can only say that I didn't think the price for the second set was that high, at least not for me (I'm the one that ended up with the winning bid for the second set and the one that was third on the first set).

And I say that for two simple reasons. As I've said before, I was out of my collections for several years. I am only complete up to about STS-70 or so. Sure I have several of the newer ones above that, but most I don't. So this particular lot turned out to be a good deal for me. Not only did I get the original 114 patch ($30-50 value), the other 14 patches in the set I am missing with the exception of just 2.

So, I got 12 needed patches AND the 114 original. So even figuring $4 per patch for the "plain" patches, that's still just shy of $60. Then when you add the original 114, that leaves $40 for that patch. And since these are all AB patches, that $60 is more like $80 ($6 x 14), which leaves only $20 for the 114.

So when you really look at it, it wasn't a bad deal in my case. I do agree that it would have been WAY overpriced if all you valued in the set was the 114, but for me, I was willing to pay $102 for the lot because of what it does for my collection. I hope this makes sense!

All I have to do now is get them delivered with out my wife finding out I just spent $100 on patches!

Really it is not that bad if you need the rest of the patches. It works out to about $6.84 a patch since there were 15 patches total. If you were just going for the 114/Atlantis patch then it is a lot. Then again if there was a AB 61-E or a AB STS-42 Carter I would have paid that and been happy.

Ok Gonzo and OV-105, if you required most of the other AB Emblem mission patches as well, then yes it wasn't so bad a price to pay. I was just counting the original STS-114 patch myself, (as all the others would be spares in my case).

The thing is this seller, John is lucky enough to have a whole load of these STS-114 original patches to dispose of, so the more he lists the cheaper they will become. He's been smart enough to list them with other patches so far, (except one listing), yes he still has other patches left to mix them with at this point in time, but he will have to start listing them as single patches sooner or later.

I agree Kevin, it is hard to see what the AB 114/Atlantis is worth without more single patch listings. I know I got one after STS-107. I also got one of the Hunt patches but it was before any RTF crews had been named. I picked them up for normal patch price $5-$6 each at the time. Like I said before I think there is a good number of the 114/Atlantis patches out there, but people do not know what they have or they are sitting there since most people want flights that were flown. I wonder if there is a room at AB with stacks or 51-E, 51-D Jarvis-Walker, 61-E, 42-Carter and 114/Atlantis patches stacked up that they can't sell. It's ok to dream I guess.

For those interested, there's another lot similar to the one I bought from the same seller up on eBay. Lot 280890895882.

It too has an original 114 included and is the last of the original 114 patches he has to sell. I will also say that this seller is lightning fast on shipping and they deliver what they have listed. Mine came with about 20-25 STS mission stickers too (bonus!).

Hopefully #400319425467 is the last of this seller's space items (and shill bidding). Although, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he rigged it so that his shill bidding account would win (allowing him to graciously make an offer to the 2nd highest bidder, which was me). No way to tell since, as always, he set the bid history to private.

It is obvious to me that there was some shill bidding going on on the 8th and 9th.

He still has a lot more of the original AB Emblem STS-114 patches yet to sell, (unless he has sold some privately). He originaly had 3 packs of 25 to start with.
