Scott, have you got room for one of these? A titanium fuel tank designed for spaceflight on the Service Propulsion System (SPS) on the Apollo Command Service Module (CSM). |

It's not an Apollo Command/Service Module (CSM) artifact unfortunately... |

It seems to have the right shape for a CSM tank don't you think? |

The general geometry is correct but the dimensions are wrong. |

Once a member of the Mercury Astronaut Program himself, the Naval Captain was roommates with astronaut Gus Grissom and briefly with Apollo 13's Jim Lovell. Hmmm... anyone have a list of the Mercury Program Finalists who were NOT selected and were NOT selected at a later date? The tank mey be a real artifact, from early in the development of the Apollo systems perhaps. But if Scott says it's not a CSM artifact, then it certainly isn't an actual CSM tank. One wonders about the unnamed Captain too... |

The story did seem a bit fishy. There are often imprecisions in the language that are telling. In this case referring to the tank as a "silo" seems odd as well as the phrase "missiles intended for the moon." |

Whilst I do not know too much about the actual hardware, I can verify that it is indeed in the garden of one of the 32 Mercury finalists. He sent me photos of this and some other collected artifacts a few months back. |

So perhaps there is more to this story! |

Colin that's really great to hear. Has he ever written about his experience in the selection process? |

Has anyone any thoughts on a more-or-less permanent feature on eBay, a metal artifact which the seller claims to be a titanium fuel tank from the unflown Apollo 18 CSM? This seems to be on permanent "Buy it Now" offer for $104,000(!) I can't help wondering what would happen if someone staggers home from a bar on a Friday night, checks eBay and says: "Whoah! What if I just click "Buy it now?"Editor's note: Threads merged. |

I'm now in the position of confirming that the owner of this item is Capt. Dale Cox, and he is the lead character in my new book, "Selecting the Mercury Seven: The Search for America's First Astronauts." His life story, and participation as one of the 32 Mercury finalists, is related in the book, due out this September. |
