Welcome to the U.S. Grab Bag, Apollo 50th Anniversary edition.

In the spirit of ongoing Apollo anniversary festivities over the next few years, a grab bag is starting up for a journey around the US. There will be no set end date at this point. This thread will be used for discussion, comments, and updates as the Grag Bag is progressing. You can also share what items you took out, just keep what you put in a secret. The Grab Bag is live as of now, and I will mail the box out to the first person this week. Please follow the instructions below and have fun!

What to do:

  1. Sign up on the Grab Bag Roll Call list here.
  2. Wait for the cS member directly in front of you on the list to email you.
  3. Respond back when asked for your name and mailing address.
  4. Wait for the box to arrive, track package delivery using USPS.com.
  5. You should plan on a turnaround time of a couple of days.
  6. Look through the box, remove items you want to keep and add items you'd like to share.
  7. Re-pack the box, adjusting the amount of packing material (more or less) to fill the void.
  8. Contact the next person on the Grab Bag Roll Call list. An example email:
    Subject: collectSpace US Grab Bag

Hello, this is cS member [XXXX].

Congratulations, you are next in line for receiving the Grab Bag, please send me your name and mailing address. I will send you the USPS tracking number when I ship out the box on [Month-Day]. Enjoy!

  9. Ship out the box, covering up all old labels, and email the USPS tracking number to the recipient.
  10. You are done. If you want to get back in line, simply re-add your name to the Grab Bag Roll Call list.
Notes:
  1. There is nothing special about the box itself. It is a USPS Large mailing box, which may be obtained for free at a Post Office or online at USPS.com. Past runs of the Grab Bag have shown that after a handful of shipments, the box will need to be replaced. Use your best judgement, and when it doubt just replace it with another Large Flat Rate box.

  2. If you are on vacation, away for work, in the hospital, or otherwise unable to attend to the Grab Bag, don't worry, get to the Grab Bag as soon as you can. It would be a good idea to email the next recipient and let them know of your situation and an estimate of when you can get going on it.

  3. For those who haven't participated in the past, here is a list of typical grab bag items to give you an idea. Anything space related is welcome, so let your imagination do the work, you'll never know what may await you inside.

Some examples: patches, pins, decals/stickers, flags, photos, press kits, trading cards, autographs, badges, books, bookmarks, models, coins, medals, postcards, philatelic covers, and flown/unflown artifacts.

Jeff, this is good timing. I have the box packed up and ready to go. I have tried to contact Chuckster01 (next recipient) via email, but I haven't heard back.

Chuck, if you are out there, send me a message so that I can get the box on the way to you. Thanks! — Michael

As Chuck is in Florida on the space coast, might want to hold off on sending anyways until the upcoming storm passes.

It's never ending fun and adventure here on the Space Coast. First the auction and now an impending storm. But I am still very excited to see the grab bag and with over 10,000 goodies in my collection, I will be sure to add something special.

Box is heading for Texas and I must say what a great idea. I was very impressed by the variety of items in the box. I took a great Apollo recovery patch, an Apollo 11 pin back button, a Falcon 9 patch that is now on display with my Falcon 9 model and I added some things I think others will enjoy. Thank you Jeff for such a great idea.

Just received the bag. Whoever put the Story book in, it is appreciated. Replaced it with a signed Buzz book and another book. Took a pen and a button as well. Some really interesting items in there.

Will be sending it along Monday.

I really enjoyed digging through all the Grab Bag stuff, and did strive to make sure I put in more stuff than I took out just like the first time around in 2018.

Without spoiling any details on contents, I'm glad to hear that my additions were appreciated. Now I have to cut some glass and matte board for the cool treasures I found! Looking forward to the 2020 Grab Bag Mission too.

So, I am currently in possession of the box.

Among the items I was thinking about adding to it is a patch I designed and had made for a fictional STS-136 mission. The names include myself and my friends.

It will be clearly marked as such, of course. But I wanted to see if this might be considered bad form. Thoughts?

Not sure if your patch is bad form but also not sure if a gag patch made for you and your friends would be of interest to anyone other then your circle of friends.

It may end up just traveling the country in the box without finding a home.

The first circuit of the Grab Bag completed just after new year's day. During the course of 6 months in 2019, it visited 22 people over at least different 12 states. Thanks to all those that have participated so far in making this a success.

With the help of a few cS'ers, I've now restocked the box with some fresh items and the second circuit will be starting this week.

Happy collecting!

Question, if we indicated that we wanted to be on round two right after we received the package do we need to sign up again in the other post? I signed up again back in late October 2019, I believe.

To answer your question, everyone who signed up in the roll call up to yesterday is good to go for Round 2 (including you JBoe). I've updated my post in the Roll Call to show where 1 ended and 2 starts, there will be 19 people in the next round.

Round 3 will start after immediately after that. As a reminder, anyone can sign up for Round 3 (including people who have participated before) until I get the box back in my possession after those 19 people are done (~5 months from today based on last go around).

How is there a new round when in the first round, I signed up 7/11/2019, and have yet received notice it has being sent?

Now you say a third round is started. Please explain.

I want to apologize to everyone for the delay on the U.S. grab bag.

I had some personal matters come up and the weekend that I planned to send package off I was exposed to a co-worker who tested positive for COVID-19. So I have been in quarantine.

I will be out next week; so the package, which had already been sealed before I got in contact, will be disinfected and sent out. Everyone please be safe.

So I have received the grab bag twice over the last couple of years. The most recent time was earlier this spring.

I received it, took what I wanted, added a few items, then shipped it to the next person in line. So I do not have it in my possession.

If it did not make it to the next person in line, please let me know and I will attempt to track it.

I have no idea where I was in line, but never received it here in Greensboro NC (I routinely use my office address for a locked, indoor climate controlled mailbox). This worked well for the very first grab bag, and the first round of the second one.

Thanks for bumping this topic back to the top.

I do not know where the grab bag is, but hopefully members here will see the post and can help track down its most likely location.

I had sent a few emails out at the beginning of 2021 but did not get any responses back and had not resumed the hunt. Thanks to those that have already posted. Overall I was happy with how well Round 1 went and how Round 2 was going.

I apologize that it has been lost, which is disappointing to me and those waiting on the list. I have a box full of stuff ready to replenish it but it has not made its way back to me either.

I've learned a few things from hosting the first two rounds:

  1. I should have probably asked people to post here publicly when they mailed it to the next person as a way to formally close out their role. Even if a few forgot to post, we would still have a better idea of where it was at any given time. We could have changed our sign-up posts to "completed" or something like that, as a different way to log that it was mailed on cS itself.

  2. I should have probably created a dedicated sign-up post for Round 2 instead of tacking it onto the end of Round 1, which as my 5 year old would say "caused confusion and delay on the railway!"

  3. While items that are placed in the box, duplicates, freebies, etc. naturally have some nominal value, the purpose is to allow others to pass along these items to people who genuinely want to keep, enjoy or re-gift them. Unfortunately, several items from the box were removed merely to re-sell. I noticed through my usual eBay searching that on several occasions items that I put in the box or had known to be in the box were listed soon after being removed from the grab bag and placed on eBay. I would make it more clear in the future that while no one can prevent this from happening, its not really the spirit of the grab bag process.
If the box cannot be found, I would be happy to coordinate another round from the start with preference to those who had missed out on the end of Round 2. I'll apply the lessons learned from the earlier rounds and aim to improve the experience.

To close, if you happen to have the grab bag, feel free to contact me and we can figure out what to do next. If this year has been as crazy for others as it has for me, I can fully understand how anyone would have lost track of it on their plate. No harm, no foul in my mind, just hoping to get things back going whenever we can. Thanks again!

In addition, maybe post in this thread, "Space Grab Bag received from XYZ today." When sent out, then post "Space Grab Bag sent to ABC at location today."

So I did some checking on where it went after I had the package. After I received and repacked it, I sent it to Bill Kowalczyk in November of 2020 (I was a little off in my timeline estimate). He confirmed that he received it, and I gave him instructions on how to send it to the next person (Chuckster01). Unfortunately I don’t know what happened to it from there.

Hopefully this string will help to locate the package!

Received an email from a William Kowalczyk today, saying he has "the box" but he doesn't identify himself as a cS member. And no I will not answer any email that doesn't properly identify themself as a member or the item correctly with all the phishiing emails out there.

So does anyone recognize the name?

Yes, William (Bill) is a member since 2005. Michael Key's last reply above also mentions Bill as being the last person with the grab bag.

Thanks cS sleuths!

I am in contact with Michael/Bill and will have the box shipped back to me as the next step.

Then I will restock and restart the grab-bag. I will post all the details shortly after I get it back in hand.

I really appreciate the effort and hope to make this next round a great experience.
