Ken Willoughby may well have Walt Cunningham planned for March but he is always working on future events. Not surprisingly Ken's shows do not happen overnight.

Tonight Ken posed an interesting question to me: "I need to know as soon as possible how many would be willing to pay £50 to see Harrison Schmitt next October 12/13? If there is enough interest I will send out more details."

Suffice to say I'm in. Anybody else interested?

Unless I am very much mistaken such an event would be Jack Schmitt's first in the UK.

A resounding YES from me, Rick!

I'd certainly fly over from Ireland for Schmitt, and I could possibly persuade Dad to come with me so that would be two tickets!

Just a note on the date in case you hadn't noticed (you probably have) but Autographica is down for October 12th-14th next year.

But this would make for an excellent opportunity, would love to get a photo with Jack and hear him talk about his life.

Met him at the 2007 International Space Development Conference in Dallas. He's great guy and would encourage anyone on your side of the pond to take advantage of this opportunity. Go for it!

Yep, I'd have two tickets. But as already mentioned be careful with the date as it may deter some backsides on seats?

YES

I think it would be safe to say that everyone would say yes and make special arrangements for this.

I remember seeing Harrison Schmitt give a talk in London at the Boat Show back in early '80s (at Olympia I think). Not sure if that counts as a first for him in UK.

The Boat Show event is new to me I have to confess. But the chance to have dinner with Jack in addition to the lecture is probably are first for the UK.

It is worth pointing out at this stage that Ken is in very early negotiations with Dr Schmitt. A positive response to this poll will go a long way to making it happen.

As will a good turn out to see Walt Cunningham in March. Ken plans on holding an auction following the dinner with Walt. Any proceeds from the auction will be ploughed back in to bringing over Ken's next astronaut guest.

So if anybody is having doubts about travelling to see Walt get yourself a ticket to the dinner, bid in the auction and support Ken in his sterling ongoing efforts.

This would be an excellent opportunity to hear why the only geologist to explore the Moon is very skeptical about the scientific world's consensus on how the Moon was formed - and how recent studies of Apollo 15 and 17 samples have provided strong support for Schmitt's skepticism.

Hmm, I think David may be alluding to the possibility that huge interest may sometimes result in large fee getting larger!

Ken already knows Jack's fee and it is plenty big enough already thank you. Don't forget who we are dealing with here. At the risk of sounding cheesy a hero with great integrity not some fly by night charleton.

In any case, Ken is a bluff Yorkshireman in the Fred Truman mould. Safe to say he knows what he is doing.

Compared to a transatlantic flight (the alternative way to see your chosen astronaut) the fees are immaterial. I'm sure none of us regret the €300 or so we shelled out to see and meet Neil Armstrong in Dubln several years ago.

There's a good article in the Jan 2012 edition of Air and Space magazine titled "The Second-Moon Theory". When I first read of this new concept in the newspaper it made no reference to the water recently found in lunar volcanic glass. This article accepts that the water, unless explained, goes against this new theory. It would be nice to ask Jack his thoughts on the theory. When I talked to him in July he continued to claim that the impact theory to explain our moon doesn't work, but I would be interested in hearing what he thinks about some of the ideas in this article to explain the presence of water.

There has been a bit of a lift in ticket sales the last week or so for Ken's event in March 2012, but last I heard 80+ tickets is disappointing. It certainly causes Ken to question whether he would get the support necessary to bring Jack Schmitt over next fall.

Put simply a successful event with Walt will determine whether or not Jack Schmitt is invited to Pontefract.

Might I suggest any "lurkers" reading these posts, hoping to meet Jack Schmitt but with no intention of attending the Walt Cunningham event in March... reconsider.

The current economic environment is clearly having an effect of peoples discretionary spending. But my limited dealings with Ken and some involved with Autographica have brought home to me the stark reality that these guys will not be coming to these shores for very much longer. A daunting prospect that has been predicted for many a year but sadly now that time is upon us.

I did not attend the Neil Armstrong event held in Belfast some years ago for financial reasons.

I have spent many a moment since regretting that decision!

We must make every effort to take advantage of the few remaining opportunities... while we still can.

Walt is a great guy with lots of fun stories, not only astronaut stuff; he seems to have an opinion on everything which makes for lots of fun discussion. If I lived in your pond I'd definitely be there; no way would I pass up this opportunity!

I would "second" what Mel says above. In more than one conversation with him over the years, Walt's knowledge and candor of the entire US manned space program is both entertaining and sometimes humbling. He can also be quick to point out long regarded myths with factual and refreshing "I was there" straight-talk. Simply put, it's a rare treat to just be in the same room with the guy. If you have the chance, I would not pass up on the opportunity.

I urge everybody to make the effort to attend the Walt Cunningham talk and, if it happens, Jack Schmitt's as well. We are so fortunate to have Ken Willoughby and his team arranging these brilliant presentations and we must support them.

As a personal memoir I remember many years ago when attending our local natural history society that a very keen geologist (now sadly passed away) called me over and asked me to shake his hand. When I did he said that I have just shook hands with a man who had shaken hands and had talked to Harrison Schmitt who had worked on the moon. I was thrilled for him and never dreamed that one day I too would meet astronauts, who had been to the moon, and cosmonauts as well.
I suppose that sounds a little like a song that was doing the rounds in the '20s or '30s (well before my time may I add) sung by a flapper that went something like "I danced with the man, who danced with the girl, who danced with the Prince of Wales". Sorry about that! I digress.

So I too would love to meet Jack Schmitt who through his hard work and determination deservedly went to the moon. Lets all help Ken to bring it on.

The initial soundings from Dr Schmitt are that he would sign his book. Ken is hoping he may sign other items also but only time will tell on that score.
