I was very honored to meet Neil Armstrong in Sydney yesterday. He was bought out by the Australian CPA for their 125th anniversary celebrations.

I am fortunate to know a bunch of the Honeysuckle Creek and Parkes tracking guys from the Apollo era at the Apollo 11 40th celebrations held in Canberra, back in 2009. They were invited back to meet Neil after the talk, I tagged along and ended up chatting with him for about 20 minutes.

The man is very easy going and natural, like a friendly neighbor down the street, rather than a global celebrity and historic figure of the 20th century.

Neil was very excited to see this, he first saw it just the day before:

I will upload some pictures soon. The talk was very interesting and thoughtful, then he had a 30 minute interview and audience Q&A.

Great stuff. Now I have a better sense of those famous boulder fields he had to navigate through.

I know this is crazy but the shadow of the descent stage looks to still have the ascent stage attached! Must be my age?

I'm with you. That shadow looks really misleading particularly the shape of the rendezvous radar antenna. Can someone furnish us with an explanation before the conspiracy theorists rush the room.

The link I gave here is, in fact, not the video shown on the night, rather an earlier iteration. The new one is not yet released and is full motion, matched to the 16mm, all the way to the surface. Stand by!

Neil mentioned he was going to be testifying to congress after he gets back home, any idea when that may be?

The future direction of NASA, according to AFP.
The first man to walk on the moon is due to address the US Congress on new directions for NASA in coming weeks...

Now 81, Armstrong said the agency had become a "shuttlecock" for the "war of words" between the executive, legislative and congressional arms of US government.

"It's my belief given time and careful thought and reasoning we will eventually reach the right goal, I just hope we do it fairly quickly," he said.

The normally private and reserved space veteran said Mars should be the next frontier for exploration but urged more missions to the moon as the vital next step.

"I do favour going to Mars but I believe it is both too difficult and too expensive with the technology we have available at the current time," he said.

No, it is attached. This was the the film of the landing as it happened.

When will the word 'reclusive' stopped being associated with this man by the media?

For a recluse, he sure makes a lot of appearences.

The details (date, time, location) have not yet been announced but Armstrong, Cernan and former NASA administrator Mike Griffin are said to be testifying before the House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology in September.

All times are CT (US)
