I am hosting a space collectors gathering at my house in Carrollton, Georgia on Saturday, August 20, 2011. It will start about 10:00 am ET and continue until the last collector leaves.

I'll serve pizza for lunch for everyone, and dinner too, if needed.

If you are interested contact me off line for directions.

"Hey" to all my Georgia friends! You are going to have a GREAT time!

I don't know if this is an annual event for you all down there or not, but this reminds me of the ATA Space Unit meetings Les Winick and others put together in the Chicago area in our 70's and 80's heyday of collecting.

We always met at a big area show, tried to get together for lunch with swapping stories and covers afterward or before... and several times had an astronaut join us! No bigger thrill and just shows the commitment many people have to the hobby.

Sincere thanks (finally, after all these years) to my Chicago area friends for all their hard work!

Sorry I can't be there. Don't forget to submit your bids to Donnis' auction in advance!

Yesterday Gilbert Huey was kind enough to open his home to a bunch of area space enthusiasts. We had the usual Atlanta crowd plus the treat of Fred Karst driving up from Savannah and Scott Phillips driving down from Huntsville. The photos below show some of the fun day we had talking and showing our mementos in Gilbert's new library, which is gorgeous. Scott brought his Shuttle Tribute which is striking in person. Everyone agreed it was great to talk to people with similar passions - that's the real fun of these get togethers.

Here's a group shot in front of a beautiful Apollo painting:

The rear of Scott's tribute features the workers from the Shuttle program:

The little ball of fur on the rug in the center of the photo above is our Shi Tzu, Isabella sleeping. Our Lhasa Apso, Buffy had already gotten bored and went downstairs. Both dogs love space stuff, but their hero is Laika, of course.

We all had a fantastic time. Meeting Fred from Savannah and Fred from Birmingham for the first time in person was nice. All the rest of us had met in person at other events, some going back more than a decade. A lot of vintage space memorabilia changed ownership in that room yesterday, and that's so cool to me. Great event. Thanks everyone for making the long drive to Carrollton. Let's plan another event in early 2012!

I see the number of signatures on that piece has grown since the last time I saw it in July. I am glad Scott was able to bring it for you guys to see it. Wish I could have been there, but my bank account is still recovering from my last drive through the area.

I'm still not sure how I left with more stuff than I brought. Thanks to Fred Karst and Scott for the freebies.

Looks like it was a great time! Just out of curiosity, what flight(s) was/were the two certificate-mounted American flags flown aboard?

The flown flags are Scott's and he told us but at that point my brain was so full of new info I can not remember now.

It was a great event and well worth the drive. Joel had some great flown items to trade and I ended up with the 1/100 scale 747 that Jimmy had. I may have come away with less items but more volume.

What an oustanding day!

Now that Scott's let the word out about Gilbert's surgery I think he deserves an award. Who else would order 3 large pizzas for 7 guys days after heart surgery? And if you think the toppings were carrots and lettuce think again - sausage, bacon, pepperoni, more bacon, silica dust, wiring from pad 34, dirt from the flame trench etc.

Kudos to Gilbert!

Yes, I ordered everything on the pizza except what Joel likes. Sorry about that Joel!

Gilbert & Gang - wow: sounds like you all had a ball. One of these days, I am going to have to make the trip down for this event. And Gilbert -- take good care of yourself! Hope all is well and going speedy on your recovery!

I'll second what Rich just said. Some day I would love to attend a get together like this in Georgia, but is Carrollton located in northern Georgia near the Atlanta area?

It would be great to visit with so many Georgian collectors like Gilbert, Jimmy, Joel, Scott, both Freds, and maybe next time Bob McLeod will be able to attend, huh?

My best, Gilbert, for a quick recovery and do take good care of yourself.

Gilbert it was a great gathering. I really enjoyed meeting people that I have only known through these forums. I am in for early 2012.

Thanks again for your hospitality. Thanks also to Jimmy and Joel for some great trades and everyone for the other items given.

Ken - Carrollton is about 60 miles west of Atlanta on I-20. It's about 10 miles from the Alabama border.

I forgot to thank Fred Benjamin for driving down from Alabama in my earlier post.

The most interesting parts of the day were the round table discussions - you would not believe the diverse and interesting answers to topics like "why do you collect", "would you like to fly in space" and of course the future direction of manned spaceflight in the USA.

Unfortunately I forgot to ask the key question: What would you like on your pizza?

No, not exactly Joel. I'm sorry to say it's an old English seafaring term meaning an odd looking bunch of ship hands or ships crew for an old fashion sailing ship.
(Pirates of the Caribbean comes to mind).

I thought you were comparing us to the big hair, heavy metal band from the 80s.
