Space Cover #570: Kosmos-782

This week's space cover commemorates the flight of Kosmos-782, a joint cooperative mission by the Soviet Union and the United States.

Kosmos-782 was launched on Nov. 25, 1975 and recovered safely 19 days later. The U.S. experiments carried were four passive experiments developed by NASA requiring only stowage aboard the satellite. Seven other U.S. experiments provided for analysis of tissues supplied by Soviet investigators from their own experiments.

Some of the experiments that flew was a radiation dosimetry experiment, which measured the flux of cosmic rays; rats were flown in numerous experiments including the stress effects on stomachs of rats, effects on the immune system of rats, life span of red blood cells in rats, effects on bone formation in rats and effects of cosmic rays in rats.

The cover shown was autographed by Ames Research Center Project Manager, Richard Simmonds. In the latest edition of Topical Time July/August 2020 issue, Dr. Simmonds wrote an article about the mission. It makes for interesting reading.
