Space Cover of the Week, Week 388, October 23, 2016

Space Cover of the Week 388: STS-115 Launch

This week's cover commemorates the launch of STS-115 on Sept. 9, 2016.

As you can see, a mistake was made when these covers were serviced. Covers were cancelled with the wrong month in the hand cancel. Sometimes the clerks servicing our covers do not check the hand cancels before using them. This does not happen too often.

Ken Havekotte inquired and found out many crew-signed covers were cancelled in this manner. To salvage the covers, the KSC post office agreed to put the correct date of launch on the covers.

John, great cover. Can you tell us whether the postmark is applied on KSC property or at the Orlando post office?

I believe it was at the Orlando post office. Ken Havekotte can tell us definitely where the cancel was applied.

Not at the Orlando P.O. facility near the international airport, but from the Titusville-KSC branch postal station. The smaller bullseye cancel device had been used as a supplement or additional postal hand cancel strike throughout the 1990's and 2000's.

All times are CT (US)
