Haven't seen a thread here about this: the NASA meatball patch on Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 PLSS was removed and replaced shortly before the flight. The removed patch was sold at auction in 2017.
Dan Schaiewitz notes that during the checkout exercise, Chief of MSC Crew Systems Division Robert Smylie suggested that the NASA label sewn to Armstrong's PLSS thermal cover was discolored and should be replaced.

On the lunar surface, the NASA patch on Armstrong's PLSS can be seen in EVA photo AS11-40-5916.

Photo S69-38493 looks like it was taken during the final hardware checkout, so I would say that the NASA meatball patch seen on Armstrong's PLSS is the patch that was removed and sold at auction.

There is an EMU CCFF (Crew Compartment Fit and Function) on June 25, 1969 in the Apollo 11 crew training summary.

In the Armstrong PLSS NASA meatball beta cloth patch shown above, you can clearly see a printing error: part of the white orbit track on the left passes in front of the red chevron, instead of behind it like this:

All the NASA meatball beta cloth patches I have seen have that same mistake, even the flown ones. This Apollo 7 photo of Donn Eisele is a good example:

(I mentioned this error on another thread.)

All times are CT (US)
