Please excuse my ignorance regarding patch numbers. I have been collecting Man in Space patches since the mid-70s and have never paid attention to the numbers.

Please explain this importance to the "real" collectors who keep track.

Take a look at AB Emblem labeling its space patches for most of the SKU patch design numbers and date codes used on the A-B Emblem patches with the new "crown" logos on their embedded labels, from December 2017 to date.

As to why...

The reason that the labels exist is because U.S. child safety laws were updated a number of years ago to require tracking of retail products, but for some collectors they serve a secondary purpose of identifying production runs. So if there are errors or design changes, or if you just want to know how many different runs of a certain patch have been made, the labels provide that reference.

The labels can also sometimes be used to identify the same run of patches as the crew wore or flew into space, but that of course requires knowing the numbers associated with the original NASA order.
