Does anyone have a close-up photograph they could share with me of the patch emblem carried by Valentina Tereshkova on the left breast of the lightweight blue suit she wore under the orange pressure suit on her Vostok flight?

It's in the Museum at the Gagarin Training Centre and I've had it described to me, but I'd certainly like to see it for myself. It is described by many as featuring a dove, but when I asked Tereshkova in Coventry she was quite emphatic that it was a seagull - her call sign.

I have two sources. One is to get the .avi movie on the Female Cosmonauts group on Yahoo and freeze the suiting up video clip. There are also a couple images I have. If you can send me an e-mail address I'll be happy to send them as well as the video.

It is most definitely a dove as it has the olive branch in its beak!

Kyra, many thanks for your kind response, but as you can see the lovely Liz Warren has sent me a great close-up photo of the "mission patch" Valentina was wearing beneath her pressure suit that day.

My curiosity was aroused because I spent a lot of time chatting with Valentina and Museum Director Elena at Coventry in October, and I specifically asked why she had a dove embroidered onto her track suit when her call sign was Seagull.

Both Valentina and Elena knew exactly what I was asking, as I had an STS-114 mission patch on the shirt I was wearing, and we spent a bit of time in friendly discussion about it. But both of them were adamant that the bird carrying the olive branch on her patch was a seagull.

Now I'm no ornithologist, but if that's not a dove on her patch then I'll give up.

Anyone know whom the embroiderer was? If Valentina said it's a seagull, it's a seagull.

Valentina told me it was put together as a surprise by two ladies in the spacesuit design area. This could be where the problem originates - they might have made it a dove, but when Tereshkova flew with the new callsign "Chaika" (Seagull) she may have adopted it as that species of bird. In training she was called "Birch" and another of the women cosmonauts - perhaps Solovyeva - actually had the callsign of Seagull.

Fifty years ago, first woman to fly in space wore world's first mission patch

Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who 50 years ago this Sunday (June 16) launched aboard the Soviet Union's Vostok 6 mission, set a world record by becoming the first woman in space. But her gender wasn't the only contribution that Tereshkova made to the cultural history of space exploration — she was also the first to wear a mission emblem on her spacesuit, although it was hidden from view.

Now half a century later, a Dutch artist is set to bring that patch into the light — and to the public — by producing replicas.

For anyone interested in a full size replica or a half size replica patch... I will have them available in the first week of July. So details will follow in about two weeks.

Congratulations Luc, Erik and Jacques. Another wonderful contribution to patch collecting.

I look forward to adding a half size one to my collection.

Are there plans to present one to Valentina?

Are there plans to reporoduce other Soviet crew patches?

The full size replica patch is SOLD OUT! All 25 that were available are on their way to a collectors home...

Only the half size (10 cm high) is available for 10 Euro + shipping. Thanks.

I was interested in a full size patch, but based on what I read the ordering details would be posted later closer to July?

Jacques, given the clear interest, would a second batch of 25 be in order?

I ordered (sent payment for) one of both sizes as per an e-mail I received from Jacques. Don't know if my order was included in the 25 he is referring to. Or not.

I just hope we don't wind up seeing the same guy selling all these patches on eBay for some astronomical sum. This is supposed to be a hobby for collectors, after all...

Jacques' e-mail said to e-mail him before sending money as he was confirming, on a first come, first serve basis who would be able to order the full size patch.

It also noted that orders for the full-size patch were limited to one per person, so it is not like anyone could have ordered a supply to resell.

Jacques, if you plan on a further production run of 25 of the large patches please let me know. I'd be interested in both the full size and half size versions.

Yes, I did get an e-mail to that effect. I just wanted to make sure because the wording of his post implied that the 25 available ones were on their way to "a" home (singular). He stated "you can order only 1" so I assume that means my order was accepted.

I too was waiting for the details, as I was interested in the full size. If I had known beforehand they were already available, I would have sent an email.

What a shame, I was waiting for this patch since long.

Thank you so much!

I would be really grateful if you could do that and am sure there are many other collectors interested in the full-size patch, as it is a unique item.

Sorry for the confusion I may have caused. I did not expect that there would be so much interest in the full size replica. I thought that of the 20+ I had available for collectors only half would sell, but in one day there were all gone!!!

So to please everybody we have decided to do an extra run of 50 patches (that is the minimum we have to order). That is what we think should be enough for everybody who I had to disappoint the first time...

When they are ready we would post it here, and I will again send out an e-mail to the collectors who are on my list for new patches. Again sorry.

Jacques, I still am not sure if my order was one of the 25 because of the timing involved. Could you send me an e-mail and let me know what took place?

Obviously, since the transaction went through, I assume either I will receive one from the first run or one from this new run. Please let me know...

Suggestion: Maybe a request list or pre-order list/payment could be made for the next batch of full size replica patches could be made.

This would insure that the minimal amount required for the order is fulfilled and that each collector would be able to order at least one if not extras if they wanted too?

I'm sure selling another 50 won't be a problem as I wouldn't mind purchasing at least 2 or 3 of them.

I would vote for keeping it limited to one per person to keep the patch collectible, but that's just my opinion.

I agree with Robert, this is a lifetime keepsake, not a "buy-and-sell" commodity.

We can trade away to our heart's content on the smaller ones but the full-size really needs to be 1 per person, especially if there are only going to be 75 of them extant.

I always like to purchase a an extra when possible for the sake of either giving it away, a future trade or whatever. I have yet to sell or profit off the extra patches like the SpaceX set that I have. I purchased two sets and still have two sets and plan on having them for a long time. I have no problem with one being the limit to hold it as a true collectable.

I agree with you 100% Robert in that opinion.

What a privilege it is to be given the opportunity to buy even one of those life size patches. At the end of the day, the final say should remain with spacepatches.nl.

Nice theory, but if Jacques can't find new buyers for all of a second run and has colectors who want a second or third, surely we're not suggesting he says no and takes a loss? The choice of what to do with his patches is entirely his.

Fyodor Yurchikhin and Aleksandr Misurkin had the patch with them during their June 24 EVA. It was attached to the pressurized container they carried with them, flanked by two VKD-33 (Russian EVA-33) patches.

My large and small versions arrived today, and I must congratulate Jacques on his excellent work. The full size version in particular has a real vintage look and feel to it. The half scale (quarter area) is also lovely but does look very small in comparison. I'd urge any fence sitters to go full size.
