I wanted to give it a shot to create a "commemorative" patch of the Astronaut Closeout Crew that was worn on technicians' coveralls. These individuals are probably part of the forgotten and unsung heroes as well. The "3" within the patch is in the block style numbering as that on the coveralls and the "0" is a depiction of the space shuttle hatch. |

For reference, here is the original patch, which I personally like very much (although someone not familiar with a shuttle hatch, will have no idea what he or she is looking at). And here is an image of the block-style-3. I would try to use the same shapes! You can alternatively try to place the 3 inside the contours of the hatch, and let the circular window act as your "0". |

If I might comment. A worthy project. I would make the overall shape that of a rectangle to represent the shape of the white room.I'd also recommend putting the dates at the 9:00 and 3:00 position. Just some thoughts. |

What a great idea! If ever a group of people need recognition (among the thousands involved in the shuttle) it should be the last people to have contact with the astronauts before they leave earth. As for the design, it looks great with or without a rectangular 'white room' border. I would add the words 'Space Shuttle' before the dates to the design as is, or in-between if you follow Tim's suggestion. I'm sure Guenter Wendt must be looking down and smiling! |

This is great! Thank you all for the guidance and support! I'll have to play around with the design after I get back from vacation. Erik, you make a great point to put the "3" on the hatch and use the portal as a "0". Tim, I think I have conceptualize what you are saying with the white room and having a combination of the inital design or a modified version as Erik has suggested. |

What a pleasant surprise to see a new concept of the astronaut closeout crew patch! The original concept of the patch design was first created in 1995, at my suggestion, to the closeout team's supervisor and veteran team members.It was hoped to have a limited number of cloth patches, a hundred at first, produced in time for the closeout crew to use them on their white-numbered coveralls while working the countdown and launch of the 100th American human spaceflight on Mission STS-71/Atlantis. In addition, STS-71 was also the first U.S. Shuttle and Russian Mir space station docking and joint on-orbit operations. Other joint mission firsts included in June/July 1995 was the largest spacecraft crew ever in orbit along with the first on-orbit changeout of a shuttle crew. The first patch version included "LSOC" at top since the primary space center base-support shuttle contract was operated by Lockheed Space Operations Company. A second version, with about 150 patches, was changed to "USA" at top in replacing "LSOC" since United Space Alliance took over the shuttle operations contract from Lockheed. In formulating a new patch concept, yes indeed, I do like the idea suggestions by Al, Tim, and "onesmallstep." "Space Shuttle", and perhaps even "Space Shuttle Orbiter...," should definitely be included as the original patch design did contain the names of each shuttle orbiter, though Enterprise wasn't included, as we thought best not to include her in 1995. |

Ken, et al; I thank you again for the guidance. Regarding the inclusion of the shuttle names would it be too wordy or too busy to include the phrases "Space Shuttle Orbiting Vehicle," "Space Shuttle," or just list the "OV" numbers? |

How about just the orbiter names as the original patch design included? Maybe also include "Space Shuttle" and/or "Space Shuttle Orbiter" along with each name? I think it would be too "numberly" so-to-speak in using the actual orbiter vehicle numbers. Besides, many folks and even some space buffs, may not be aware of which orbiter vehicle number applies to each shuttle orbiter name, don't you think? Make it simple and easy would be my main suggestion. |

I like the idea of the patch. This area has not received much attention. However, rather than the orbiter names I too believe their numbers would be preferable. This would solve the issue of busyness, keeping with the "clean" lines and aesthetic of using white and black as well as appealing to the space enthusiast. |

Backing up for second to Ken's comments about the White Room patches, is that correct Ken, that only 150 "USA" patches were made? |

Hey Joel, Offhand, I think the initial first run of the "USA" patch was 150, however, keep in mind some over-runs of them and, without checking my notes and invoices, I believe there was a second run of them as ordered from the authorized supervisor. Does this information jive with your notes as I am going back here nearly 20 years ago? |

Thanks Ken. I don't have any notes I was just curious as to it's rarity. I have a "USA" patch that was signed and given to me by White Room tech Rene Arriens from the STS-88 mission. It was a thank you for our Dog Crew III patch that you so generously supplied to him. |
