ISS Expedition 38 mission patchThe International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 38 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz TMA-09M in November 2013. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz TMA-11M. ISS Expedition 38 will be commanded by Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kotov. His crewmates, all flight engineers include: cosmonauts Sergey Ryazansky and Mikhail Tyurin, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata, and NASA's Mike Hopkins and Rick Mastracchio. The Expedition 38 insignia was shared on Twitter by Mastracchio. It was designed with help by artist Blake Dumesnil. |

Jorge and I worked with the crew for months on their patch and then were told they chose another artist. I was pretty bummed at the time. But now I feel much better. Blake this design is incredible! I tip my hat to you sir. The torch has been passed. I can't wait to add this patch to my collection. |

Part of the version Tim and Jorge worked on, was "recycled" for the logo for the Kosmocenter, the Russian version of Space Camp. And, what went missing there, found a good place in Expedition 37. |

That's true Erik but that was an early version of the 38 patch. I'm glad Kotov found a use for it. We worked on many designs for the crew since then. We didn't succeed with this crew, but we've enjoyed a lot of success before and since with other NASA teams. I'll post those when they are released. |

Not often I'll pass comments (positive or not) on patches, but this one I will ... reckon it's terrific. |

What a refreshing and innovatory design you have produced, Blake. Your work is worthy of the highest plaudits. Thank you. |

A very modern and great looking patch! But Earth, Moon and Mars on the patch are more to commemorate where we went during the Apollo era and where we hope to go in the future. It is not real a symbol for Expedition 38 to the ISS, I feel. |

The symbolism you describe perfectly shows where we are right now in manned spaceflight; considered that way, it is very well timed. And an impressive design that really wowed me. Makes me feel like an amateur too... Blake, I hope we get to see many more of your works in embroidery on flight suits! |

I'd like to thank everyone very much for the kind words about the Expedition 38 design! I had a blast working on this one and everyone was thrilled with the results, across the board. This design is fully approved and we won't be seeing a repeat of what happened with Expedition 36 and 37.As Luc insightfully mentioned, the crew and I felt like this was a great time to start looking forward to the future and how the ISS has become an amazing stepping stone for furthering long-duration spaceflight development. As always, I greatly appreciate everyone's feedback and support and also look forward to what the future brings! |

Did the Russian cosmonauts see this design before it was approved by NASA (I believe Kotov is Expedition 38 commander)? So I do hope he likes it and that he has approved the design... if not (I'm afraid) there will be a repeat of 36 and 37... |

Very cool patch. I noticed right off a couple similarities to the Expedition 36 patch. The planets/moon inside the numbers and the look of the solar panels. Just coincidence? |

Yes, the placement of the planets inside of the numbers in both this and the Expedition 36 design turned out to be a coincidence. I had completed this design prior to the Expedition 36 crew asking for the design revisions which included adding the planets so technically this was the first time I had used that technique. Of course, this was really more of a nod to a great design element of the past than anything else.As for the solar arrays... that was more intentional. |

I really liked the artwork for this patch and I think Blake did a fantastic job. However, I received a couple of the patches in the mail yesterday and was quite disappointed with their quality. The colors are dull and the names are not neatly sewn. When I look at the names they appear fuzzy as if I was looking through someone else's eye glasses. For a mission insignia that had great artwork the manufacturer cheated the artists talents on this one. Still yet the patch is nice and my hat goes off to Blake. |

Just curious, where did you buy them? Neither of my usual sources (AB Emblem, The Space Store) show Expedition 38 as available for purchase yet. (There's one on eBay but I don't recognize the seller.) |

Don't get me wrong, the patch is still a nice patch but in my opinion it is not up to the quality as previously produced AB Emblem patches. For one, the patch is a little smaller than most making the names a smaller font size which could be contributing to the appearance of fuzzy lettering. If the letters had been bigger then I believe they would have had more detail. As with any computer graphics, in this case the artwork the colors are going to vary in brightness, dullness, etc. If the patch had been a little larger and the thread colors brighter I would had not been disappointed. Sill yet I bought two, one for my display and one to be sewn onto a shirt. On a positive note the smaller size makes it ideal for sewing on a polo shirt. |

Sounds like a Malaysian knock off. They are all three inch instead of four inch and poor quality.

I received my 38 patch from Joe at Skyforce Patches. It has the typical made in the USA sticker on the reverse. Joe is an approved vendor for AB Emblem. It is smaller and less impressive than I expected. It is one of the best designs I've ever seen and I was hoping for a patch that matched the art. |

That was my exact thought Tim. Mine are AB Emblem with the AB "Made in USA" sticker on the back. I expected a better looking patch based on the awesome artwork. Yes, Joe has them in stock at Skyforce Patches and yes they are AB Emblem. |

The above image is of a prototype. The production version has a very minor correction to Tyurin's name (Ю instead of separate I and O). |

Here is the version produced by the "center for operation of space ground-based infrastructure" (TsENKI), meant for local distribution in Russia. I think they did a very decent job! Unfortunately, I have no idea at this moment how to get these patches. |

A late follow up to this thread but I wanted to mention that a few years ago Rick Mastracchio was selling flown ISS-38 patches to the public on Facebook. The version he sold is the "prototype" version above. He was selling from a bundle that looked like the type of packaging seen in storage from the Official Flight Kit. |
