There's a new 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) patch floating around NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. |

Do you happen to know of a source to purchase this patch from? |

There's one on eBay right now.If you can get to Edwards, I've heard they can easily purchased there. A USAF pal of mine went TDY there last month and got me one, he said he bought it on base but can't recall if it was a AAFES vendor there or he bought it at clothing sales... |

Those patches are being sold through the NASA DFRC gift shop for about $6. The 747 SCA guys also have a few they'll be selling during their trek. |

Yes, these patches are not rare, old or limited - but they are beautiful. Is there an online store for the NASA DFRC gift shop? I could not find it on Google. |

I looked yesterday and the DFRC just opened their gift shop back up March 1st. As of yet, I couldn't find an online store for them. Yeah, I had the same thought - buy it online from the gift shop. But it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon. |

From another thread, you can call the gift shop directly. All you need is a credit card, call them at 661-276-2113 or 661 276-2140. Does this help?

A very nice lady named Linda Clark at the gift shop said there's a internal website listing of their items for NASA Dryden people only. They don't have a website or even a list of items they give out to the public yet. She did say they were apparently working on that, though. I'd bet the frenzy over the shuttle delivery patches might speed that on. I for one would probably buy other stuff they have if I only knew what they had there... |

Ditto on that and God's speed to them! I would buy stuff from them more if it was available. (Hint! Hint! Hope they're reading this...) |

I called yesterday and was put on the list for the Shuttle Carriers of America patch. They will call you back and get the payment info upon arrival of the patches. All they needed was my address and phone number when I called to order. |

Anyone heard any updates on when DRFC may get these in? I'm on the wating list and have heard nothing for a couple weeks now. Thought about calling, but thought I'd check with the crew here first. |

I checked last week and they were estimating two weeks. Seems the first order was lost in the mail and they were having them remade and shipped. That is the reason for the delay. I will be calling later to add some more to my order and if I get an update I will post it here. |

These should be shipping out from the patch company soon and it takes a week to get across the country. I'll post a note once I have a more precise date. |

I just got word from the factory that these are shipping out today, so they should be available by the middle of next week. The reason for the delay was that someone at HQ thought the font used on the yellow 'NASA' was too close to that used in the NASA meatball so it had to be changed. The revised patch now looks like this: |

Great. So now we have to look for the original along with this new "changed" version. Anyone have an original for sale? (Contact me if you do...) |

But isn't that the point, that the SCA is operated by NASA? Did they have permission from Boeing to use the '747' in their special font? |

NASA HQ is pretty strict about how the official emblems are used. For example, they don't want individual parts of the meatball being used by themselves, except with certain exceptions. |

Right. And I understand and even agree with their diligence on who and how their logos can be used. The point was the patch was already in production. That is, it was already released in the form it was with the font that was very similar to their logo. It wasn't until the second run of these patches that they decided that it was too close to their logo and "HQ" decided it had to be changed. I understand that, in a strict sense, SCA is NOT a NASA run organization. However, they are very closely monitored and directed how to do their business, by NASA. My point was that why did it take NASA until the second run of the patches, when they had to approve the design in the first place, that the font needed changed? For us as collectors, now there's two versions of this patch. Not that it's a bad thing, and they certainly have the right to change patch designs at will (they are their patches), my question is, if that is their concern, why wasn't it caught before the patch went into production? |

I think NASA is foolish to insist on this change. The new typeface is bland and unoriginal.NASA has a glorious past. They should be proud of this and let others use the logos and typefaces that were seen on previous efforts. |

I found a few of the original versions in my stash, I'll sell them for $5 each plus shipping if anyone is interested. I also found a few of the old SCA/Phantom Ray Ferry Flight patches as well. Just drop me a note. I believe the SCA guys have a limited amount of the original version to sell when they make the Endeavour delivery later this year. |

Understandably so, but when I read this, I couldn't help but say, "Really..?" This is, as other posters noted, a patch already produced, and someone else shortstopped another run (at, presumably, the manufacturer's expense) because they didn't like the "NASA" font? We all endlessly (and rightly) bemoan NASA's budgetary struggles...Yet apparently there's still enough money to pay some factotum somewhere at HQ so bereft of useful duties that they have the time and energy to regulate things like this. |

Many thanks to Tony for hooking me up with a pair of these (arrived today). I don't normally get too wrapped around the axle over minor variations, but as noted above, this change just seemed silly. |

Hey guys, just talked to Jim at DFRC a while ago about my order. He/they will be calling tomorrow to get your shipping/payment info. The will then go out as soon as they contact you. I happen to call because I'll be on vacation for the next few days and didn't want to miss the call! Jim was great and took my info a bit early to accommodate me!Anyway, be patient. They have the patches and will be contacting you very shortly! By the way, gotta put this plug in here too. The folks (all of them) at DFRC are SUPER people to deal with. Can't say enough good things about them. Nor can I wait until they get their website up (in a couple of months...)! |

I scored a Alpha Industries shuttle jacket in the right color blue (not a perfect copy of the G&B jackets the crews really wear but it's a nice looking jacket anyway) off eBay for very little recently and decided to put this and the "final mission" patch on it along with a T-38 one, I think it really looks good on that color... |

Thanks! I got two sets of the patches on this jacket, just so I could eventually put one on something I could wear and keep another set for collecting purposes. Some would say I should have put a newer SCA patch on the shoulder because the older one will be worth more someday, but I wanted a patch that was more likely to have been really used by the SCA crew at some point. |

I want to make a presentation with flown material and pictures and need the graphical insignias of the Shuttle carriers of America. Does anyone know where to get the graphical logos (the old one with blue frame as well as the new one with yellow frame). I've just found embroidered patches on the web but not the graphic itself. Thanks in advance. |
