I believe that there was a spoof patch done for Gemini 7 done by the backup crew. This featured an unlit torch, a lighter and the words "NEED A LIGHT - FRANK? JIM?"

Has anyone seen this/got one/photograph of it?

This was originally a paper patch, if I remember correctly. Randy Wagner of Eagle One Aerospace (the GOOD Randy) made an embroidered replica somewhere in the mid nineties.

I have one of those patches somewhere in my studio. If you're interested, I'll track it down and send you a scan.

I also once had one, but traded it with Joel.

Yes please.

Perhaps I can broaden this a bit. Apart from this and the 'Roadrunner' patches, were there any other spoofs done in Gemini/Apollo?

Both Gemini 7 and 12 backup crews had spoof designs (12 was pumpkin-themed); whether either was ever reproduced for distribution at the time is unknown but extremely doubtful, at least in any quantity. Hoorenz is correct that Randy did both, probably 200 each. I'm unaware of a paper sticker for either, but possible.

I just emailed the GT-7 scan to you moorouge.

I also found my GT-12 spoof patch. Erik, did I get that one from you as well?

Let me know if you're interested in a scan of that one.

I had a chance to ask Aldrin about the Gemini 12 "spoof" patch and he said that it existed only on paper.

Great! Thanks for that piece of data.

On this subject, I neglected to mention that Gemini 11's backup crew, Armstrong and Aldrin, also had a patch. It carried their names but otherwise mimicked the flight patch.

I'm sure you meant Anders not Aldrin (I gather he and Neil did work together later...)

The backup patch is actually on the Spacefacts website in the Gemini 11 section.

Anyone know why, Gemini backup crew patches weren't produced for GT-8, 9, and 10?

John, does this also hold true with the backup crew for Apollo 8?

I remember seeing Armstrong, Aldrin, and Haise in front of the Saturn V and they were wearing their white flight suits with the beta cloth patches on them.

Update: after looking at the hi-res pictures on spacefacts.de, it appears that the are wearing the Borman-Lovell-Anders patch. Nevermind.

The patch shown there appears to be a modern mockup version. Was an embroidered version actually manufactured at the time, and if so are there any photos of one?

NASA photo 66-H-1200...actually shows Armstrong wearing the GT 11 backup crew patch. Photo was taken in the white room before Conrad and Gordon entered the spacecraft.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that mention on Gene's site. He does point out that in his opinion that patch is not embroidered, which means it's unlikely an embroidered version of this design was ever actually produced at the time.

1. Yes, Anders of course (sorry).

2. I agree with Gene -- not clear exactly what the emblems are made of but not embroidered cloth. They appear to be paper cut-outs pinned to the front of their smocks.

3. Version on Spacefacts is inaccurate as the "real" ones did not have the three stars.
