Topic: STS-36 mission patch: "Thout" misspelling

I acquired some shuttle patches from AB Emblem last week. One of them was from STS-36. By reading the crew names, I see Pierre Thuot's name is misspelled: It reads THOUT. In earlier runs of this patch Pierre's last name is correctly written. Is it a casual error or AB is producing large quantities of this "THOUT" patch? Does anybody know where I can get a correct version of this patch? |

I've just checked all of mine and I only have correct versions of this patch, 'THUOT'. Mine are all originals from the time of the flight.Would you like to do an exchange, one for one? You have no e-mail address so I could not e-mail you privately. |

I just checked both of mine, yep wrong spelling. I had never paid attention to it even though this is my favorite patch out of all the shuttle patches. |

I bet no one ever gave a moment's Thout to his name being misspelled....I guess now is the time to check whether or not there exists STS-49 and 62 patches with the same misspelling? |

Huh. Mine is misspelled too. Can't say for certain when or where I got it, but I've had it for a long, long time. Never noticed. |

Galactic Voyager was selling the misspelled ones right up until his last auction ended Aug. 29th. He had 10 still available when the auction finished. So I guess those with a correct patch will now be after the error variant and vice versa. You guys are crazy.  |

Well, if someone wanted to offer me four figures to part with the misspelled one, I guess I'd consider it. Otherwise, though, I'm too lazy to take the frame it's in apart and get it put back together to worry about it. |

Just checked my STS-36's from the time of the flight. Patches, decals, everything have his name spelled correctly. Same with 49 and 62.Good for him, bad for any hopes of finding rarities for me!  |

Yes, I was watching that AB Emblem spelling error patch too sell for $78 with 10 bids from 5 bidders. The winning bidder is a member of this forum.Did you check your box of duplicates Ben? |

It now looks like this STS-36 patch with the misspelt error is coming out of the woodwork, two more have been listed on eBay in the last few hours. (Both the sellers are members of this forum).The first with a start price of $12.50, and a second with a start price of $50 or a Buy It Now of $75. The correct spelt version is also selling quite well too. Sorry to hear you found none of these error patches in your duplicates box Ben. |

I am sitting here looking at three of the misspelled STS-36 patches. Another run into the Marshall Space Flight Center gift shop in Huntsville today produced these and I also got a couple more of the STS-118 "Anderson" patches like the one I picked up last time... keep one and, ahem, sell the others some fine, fair day (when the eBay price gets high enough ).Some quality control newbie at AB Emblem (who doesn't speak French) probably thought "Thout" was more likely to be correct than "Thuot." I suspect the Space & Rocket Center has had those sitting on the rack for a while, it appears that the patch rack has had little turnover besides Apollo 11 and Apollo 13 being sold out. No other variants or crew changes there on the rack. I looked "thoutroughly."  |

I did the same back in September while at KSC. They had only the misspelled "Thout" on the shelf for STS-36. I purchased all they had and have them stored in their original packaging. Maybe one of these days my children will appreciate my collection as these may become very rare. Who knows? |

I acquired my STS-36 patch just before she landed back in March, 1990. I got it from Spaceland Enterprises for the lowly sum of just $3.50. I happen to still have all my black and white snailmail catalogs from Don Clark in a binder (back then, that's all you had - no Internet!). So I looked up what he had in his catalog for STS-36 and it shows the correct spelling. So without looking (my patches are currently about 70 miles away), mine is probably spelled correctly. If I recall correctly, there was a big fuss back then about the ones that were spelled wrong and depending on where you ordered it or purchased it if you happen to be at a space center or museum that sold them, you could get either, the correct spelling or the incorrect spelling. And I'd even venture to say that most people wouldn't have known the difference! Now that you guys have perked my curiosity, I'll have to check mine when I return to the house. All that being said, if mine IS correct, I'd certainly be interested in finding a "wrong" one now. And if it is indeed a misspelled one, I'll be ordering a new one with the correct spelling. |

According to AB Emblem, the original design and manufacture were with the correct spelling. And, since discovering the error, the spelling was corrected and all their stock now has is as it should be, "Thuot." |
