I just acquired a set of patches (Apollo 11 and 12) from my aunt and I'm hoping someone can help me learn some more information about where they may have come from. They are presented in a pamphlet form. She received it it in 1969 from her dad (who was a manager of a grocery store in Southern California). She thinks he obtained it from his work somehow (promotional?). It measures 9-1/16" tall x 5-1/2" wide (23cm tall x 14cm wide) when closed.

The front cover (a painting with wide brush strokes) shows the bottom of the launch rocket (very 1960's). Below that is say "A PIECE O' HISTORY FROM APOLLO XI AND XII...".

Inside on the left it reads "To commemorate man's first exploration of the moon, here are handsome, authentic reproductions of the emblems worn by the astronauts on these missions.". Below that it reads "HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON. JULY, 1969 A.D. WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND. Richard Nixon, President United States of America.

Inside on the right is a Lion Brothers Apollo 11 patch (with the orange border). Below that is a Lion Brothers Apollo 12 patch (pre-hallmark).

The back cover is blank with the exception of "A69BOC12" printed in the bottom left hand side.

Any help in identifying this set would be greatly appreciated. I really enjoy the set and hope to learn more about it. Thanks!

You do see this set from time to time, always with the same Lion Brothers patches. I've not been able to find out when/why they were distributed.

I've wondered sometimes if the runs of orange border Apollo 11 and 'pre-hallmark' Apollo 12 variants were actually made for this presentation. If true that might explain why special variants of these two patches were created and would explain their relative scarcity.

That's very interesting and would make sense. Thank you for the information! Hopefully we'll know more about them some day.

And to prove Chris' point, here's an example on ebay at the moment - item no. 220766856641. See if this can match last weeks $158 item!

My uncle worked for General Food for 30+ years. He was always had a trunk full of promotional stuff from General Foods products. From Gaines Burgers dog food to Tang to cereals to coffees – they all had giveaway stuff to give to store managers in hopes of getting a letter better or a little more shelf space. As a nephew of one of these fellows I got a lot of good too from a plastic survival belt with a thing like a camera that had about 10 functions to my John Davidson watch. I know General Foods had an Apollo 11 patch in a pamphlet they gave away. One of those was my first space patch. I wasn’t the only one. There is more discussion on this board about Tang and their sale of Lion Brothers patches. I expect what you have is a promotional item.

This might explain why LB changed the outer color to orange from yellow, the color of Tang.

No it did not, it only made it to $67.00 (£40.95).

All times are CT (US)
