Back in 1980's, I acquired the rare Jarvis/Walker STS-51D patch at the National Air and Space Museum gift shop. This means that some of these rare shuttle patches actually were released to the public as it was in an AB Emblem package. Does anyone know what the value of this patch would be — I have never seen it for sale? |

I have seen two or three of them for sale. One of which I bought myself. I believe they were in the $100-150 range some two to three years ago, but that was at the height of the internet/patch collecting wave. Prices of patches (even rare ones) have dropped significantly over the last year because people start realizing now that every patch will come up for sale every now and then. It also depends if you have the one with the fixed tab, or the one with the tab seperately sewn on with a zig-zag stitch pattern (original AB Emblem). The first is not worth that much, probably $20 to $30. I think you could still sell the one the the seperately sewn on tab to a collector who is really searching for it for... maybe somewhere in the $50 to $75 range. But it could be more, you never know.

One more thing: I have noticed before that sometimes first batches of patches were already distributed to the National Air and Space Museum, or that a couple of them mistakenly ended up in the batch they received. |

I recently acquired two pins for this mission and a decal by similar means. I am on the hunt for a patch (with separate tab). |

An example of this rare full size Jarvis/Walker STS-51D/G patch has just been put up for sale by auction. It is part of a presentation piece from the estate of Paul E. Gilsdorf, the retired Vice President of Sales and Marketing at AB Emblem Company located in Weaverville, North Carolina. It has so far attracted six bids from four bidders and has reached $103.50 (£62.86). This patch rarely come up for sale, so it will be very interesting to see what it finally makes. Update: Now up to $202.70 (£122.31) with 7 bids from 5 bidders. The last time this patch was up for sale, it sold for $345 in September 2009 through Lunar Legacies on-line sales. (Ref. No. S0002). |

Another sale was on 14th November 2008 in a Goldberg auction, when a matched pair of patches and decals, (Javis / Walker, Baudry / Al-Saud), sold for just $70.00 with only one bid.The example that I have was bought with a Buy It Now for $49.99 on 16th June 2009. This was in a lot of ten patches all bought from the Smithsonian Inst. NASM Washington D.C. by the seller. The lot of ten patches included, Apollo 11, 13, 17, STS-51F, the STS-51D/G and a 3" NASA meatball AB Emblem patches, Skylab 3 Lion Brothers patch, STS-1, STS-61B, and STS-51L Swissartex patches. |

That presentation piece was the ultimate example of one of these patches as far as I'm concerned and a great piece of memorabilia.I particularly like the text below the patch which reads as follows: This patch, the insignia of the "original" mission 51-D, did not and never will fly aboard the space shuttle Discovery, or Challenger, or Columbia! |

I absolutely agree Chris. I think it is a great presentation piece as well. I was actually a little surprised to see I 'won' this morning. I fully expected to be outbid in the final seconds as I think $460 (although a lot of money) is a good price for such a fantastic piece of history. Not only the rare original 51D patch but also the signatures of all astronauts, including Greg Jarvis.Either way, I'm very happy with it and am going to give it a prominent place in my collection |

Maarten, you may want to check out this website. It gives you added provenance for the actual patch display you won at auction... |

Maarten, congratulations on winning this great presentation of the STS-51D patch.I was among the bidders but there was a point I had to stop bidding although I was very interested to get it myself. Back some years as seen on my internet site (link above) I received that letter from Mr. Gilsdorf. It would have been a great addition but... |

I have two 3-inch size patches of the original Jarvis and Walker 51D patch, both I got on eBay! It is clear one was what someone made up themselves, but the other one may be original. Does anyone know if original 3" patches got onto the merket before that flight was cancelled and combined with STS-51E? |

These are the two three inch versions I have: The first is fully embroidered with an overlocked edge, the second is on a twill backing with cut edge. |

I would say the one on the left is an AB 3 inch, the other one I do not know. |

The description was pretty clear: NASA Space Shuttle STS-51D Jarvis Walker Original Patch. Mint condition. This is the rare original version by AB Emblem featuring a sewn-on "Jarvis - Walker" name tab before the mission was re-manifest. |

The last two I saw on eBay sold for about $400 each. They were both AB Emblem patches. |
