I have wanted to get something that has been flown, but I do not know where to look really. I know that NASA has stuff for sale through government surplus auctions and some of the items have been flown (as it says so in the description) but I can't buy anything from them until I'm 18.

Other stuff I have seen usually goes for hundreds or thousands of dollars. I'm a teenager and I don't have that kind of money.

Where can I go to get ligament flown in space stuff for a price that won't break the bank?

You can do a search on "space flown" on eBay and find a wide variety of items. Probably the most common and affordable are commemorative coins that have a small bit of flown metal in them.

Dealers such as Florian Noller sell some presentation items that contain pieces of flown items for relatively reasonable prices.

There are also plenty of Topps Heritage items available on eBay with pieces of flown hardware on them. Start small and you can gradually work your way up!

The way how I started my collection was with flown coins. I got my first flown coin (an Apollo launch pad coin) from a NASA ex-worker who was an Aerospace Educational Specialist from Oklahoma.

I think collecting flown coins is one of the most reasonable ways to start a flown items collection because the variety is almost endless. Each time new flown coins appear on the web (most of the time not listed as flown coins) and find the old ones is getting most difficult.

The covers flown on Challenger STS-8 make nice affordable flown souvenirs. You should be able to find examples on eBay and elsewhere for $20-30.

May I also suggest David Bryant at the Space Station in the U.K. Always some nice pieces at fairly affordable prices.

Thanks for all the advice. I plan on getting the Apollo 11 40th coin soon, which I know has flown metal. I was also wondering if is possible to 'request' to have something like a flag flown on a mission?

The only means of requesting an item to be flown is if you share a personal relationship with a member of the crew, and even then, most wait for the astronaut to ask them.

Flown flags from STS missions will be in the range of a couple hundred dollars. These can be found on ebay and astro-auction.com

Flown flags from the Apollo program will be in the thousands of dollars, depending if it circled the earth, circled the moon or landed on the moon.

You might want to check on ebay for threhook items. Jerry does a great job on these displays and the price is very reasonable. Here is the thread.
