Regarding flown flags, I am confused by all of the flags out there. In addition to different sizes, there appears to be flown Vs. surface flown, nylon flag Vs. beta cloth material, etc.

Is there any reference online or printed that I can use to guide me?

A good first start is checking out Larry McGlynn's tribute to flown flags on his website. An awesome overview of his flag collection from each of the Apollo missions.

I've collected a few Apollo era flown items over the years. Lately, I've been thinking about searching for a flown Kentucky state flag. But it occurred to me that none of these may even exist.

Is there an inventory of just what national or U.S. state flags flew? And if so, how many of each made the trip? I see a variety of state and national flags come to auction now and then, but is there any way to know just how many of each are out there?

Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 carried official flag kits with the flags of 135 nations, all 50 states, the U.S. provinces, the UN and the Vatican. The flags were presented along with a sample of moon dust/rock as goodwill gifts.

Other Apollo flights carried similar flag kits and some of the astronauts carried international and state flags as well. For a related discussion on this topic, see: Lunar flown flags: where were they stowed?

Al Worden offered a number of different country flags for sale through Farthest Reaches.

I'm a little confused. According to the link above it states in part:
This is made more interesting by the fact that the flag kits for Apollo 12, 14 and 15 were explicitly carried on the LM...

There is a complication with Apollo 15 since it's not clear if the flag kit was actually lost alongside the PPKs..

Were all flags flown on Apollo 15 carried in the LM?

I posted an earlier query and received the following reply from Larry McGlynn:
Al Worden did have flags among other mementos flown to the lunar surface by his Apollo 15 crewmates, Dave Scott and Jim Irwin. At least one of the LM PPK bags was returned to Earth. According to Al, during a conversation with him last December, he got his flags back from the lunar surface.
...hope that helps.

Be careful as there's a big difference between the official NASA flag kit and the astronaut PPKs.

The flown flags being offered by Al Worden through Farthest Reaches are from his CM-flown PPK (as clearly stated on the FR website), not from an LM-flown PPK, or from NASA's OFK.

I believe each of the Apollo 15 crew carried at least one set of international flags, and maybe more. Most likely each set of flags was a duplicate of the OFK, with a flag from each UN country, plus each US state, plus a number of US flags.

Irwin used his international flags as gift presentations to national luminaries during his High Flight days. Scott sold some through Aurora in the last few years, and Worden has obviously offered some of his through Farthest Reaches.

Incidentally, I bought one of Worden's international flags through Farthest Reaches a couple of years ago and am very happy with it.

Were there presentations made with a US flown flag from STS-3? I am referring to the 8.5x11 presentation that had a US flag on them (I know STS-1, 2, and 4 had them). They also carried pre-printed signatures of the NASA administrator and the respective crew. Can anyone share with me what they may know? If they did produce said presentation, could anyone please share a photo? Thanks.

I recently acquired a collection from an estate in Florida from the public relations director who worked with the Bendix Corporation and NASA in the 60's-70's. I was able to get signed photos and press passes and unsigned photos a piece of film which was carried on board Appolo 11 and more. The one I can not seem to find information on is a flag which was in an envelope with a patch from Apollo 16. The envelope did say the flag was carried to the moon, but the flag is about 4"x6" and is a Florida state flag and not USA flag the one that seems to be the one they usually carried. Does anybody know about this particular flag and any more detailed info on the flags which where carried. I can not seem to find any detailed articles or books on the subject, which would tell how many where flown, what size and which ones where carried on the missions.

I have collected a few flown flag presentations from the shuttle program and curious if there is a website that has pictures of some of the flown flag presentations. I know that some are unique, but there are several ones that are a bit more common such as the STS-26 (Return to Flight) and STS-65 (Apollo 11 25th Anniversary).

What's a U.S. province?

All times are CT (US)
